$8.85 A no-frills CD reissue of what was already a pretty frills-free vinyl anthology from the '70s, The Very Best of the Classics IV is not geared for the obsessive fan of Dennis Yost and crew, even assuming such people exist. The sound is serviceable, the liner notes non-existent, and the skimpy ...

$7.55 Selections recorded 1962 and 1967. Pops Roundup presents a Walt Disney view of the west in which soaring strings and horns evoke images from western movies rather than the actual west. The dynamic music features all-new arrangements of classic western songs as well as themes from television, films, and Broadway shows. Woodblocks create the clippity-clop of horses' hooves, and ...

Pure Classical
$10.15 Kyle Dawkins is a critically acclaimed guitarist, composer and artist residing in Athens, Georgia. His music is a unique and spirited amalgam of avant-folk, contemporary classical and rock, rooted squarely in a Southern minimalistic framing. Kyle received his degree in classical guitar performance from the University of Georgia and has released two recordings on Athens-based label Solponticello Records. In addition to teaching and composing, Kyle is a performing member of renowned chamber ensemble the Georgia Guitar Quartet."Kyle Dawkins is a virtuoso...He allies dexterity, invention and soul."--the All Music Guide"His playing is nothing short of outstanding...It is very hard to compare this to anything else out there..."--Expose Magazine"Seldom does instrumental music grab the listener's attention like Kyle Dawkins' does."--Indieville
Personnel: Erik Hinds, Jason Solomon (guitars); Brian Smith (banjo). Georgian guitarist Kyle Dawkins drew inspiration from southern Appalachia for his first solo album, Conasauga. Released on the Solponticello label, whose catalog ranges from free jazz to soft country-rock, the album is lushly produced, highly focused, and typically (for this label) short at 37 minutes. Dawkins is a virtuoso of the classical guitar. His playing has the clarity and audacity of Andrés Segovia, the expressiveness of Chet Atkins, the dreaminess of Gordon Giltrap. The title track, "Sticks," and ...

$18.99 This is a conceptual music work, and a series of musical pictures from my memories -- from my childhood experiences and dreams, ideas about the world around me, strong influences from the characters and the cultural-musical heritage from my homeland and across the world. I was fortunate that I was born in a mystical land such as the Balkans, my father being from Herzegovina "krsh" (some kind of Golgotha landscape), and my mother from Belgrade, Serbia. It is a very strange combination of rural village and cosmopolitan city, but with tremendous and deep feelings for each other, which definitely influenced my musical sensitivity. I was growing, living and believing ...

Pure Classical
$14.15 Laura Kargul's new CD, “Liszt and Ravel: Transcriptions for Piano,” produced by Grammy award winner Bob Ludwig of Gateway Mastering and DVD, includes the rarely recorded Liszt arrangement of Beethoven’s song cycle "An die ferne Geleibte," the world premiere recording of excerpts from Ravel’s piano arrangement of "Daphnis and Chloé," and the spectacular solo piano version of Ravel’s orchestral tour de force, "La Valse: Poème Chorégraphique." Also included are Liszt's monumental transcription of Wagner's "Liebestod" and several of his stunning arrangements of songs by Schubert and Schumann.American pianist Laura Kargul first came to international attention in 1985 when her European debut in the Netherlands was hailed by the Rotterdams Nieuwsblad as “one of the most remarkable debut recitals recently given in our country.” The following year Ms. Kargul played at Amsterdam's Concertgebouw and earned immediate recognition as “A world class pianist: This is playing that belongs on our great concert stages.... almost feverishly inspired, so controlled and so thrilling.” (Haagsche Courant, The Hague) Subsequent tours have included solo performances in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Switzerland and the West Indies. As a guest of numerous international music festivals, Ms. Kargul has appeared at the Schleswig-Holstein, Nordhessen, and Eisenacher Summer Music Festivals in Germany, the Evian Music Festival in France, the Opera Theater and Music Festival of Lucca in Italy, the Lesvos Arts Festival in Greece, the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado, and Music Mountain in Connecticut. She has recorded for radio in France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Jamaica, as well as for PBS radio and national television in the United States. Although her repertoire spans from Scarlatti to Rochberg, Laura Kargul has been recognized in particular for her poetic virtuosity in playing the nineteenth century romantics. “Unassuming, without exaggerated gestures, Laura Kargul enters the stage and astounds her audience.... with great wealth of expression.... visible and audible perfection in technique.” (Thüringische Landeszeitung, Eisenach, Germany) She is one of few pianists ever invited to give a full recital on Liszt's own Bechstein piano at the Liszthaus in Weimar, Germany and her performances of Liszt have consistently drawn high praise: “Liszt wanted everything from the piano - wildness and fervor, exuberance and humility. Laura Kargul delivers all of it. She is completely absorbed by the music - elegantly floating through the most treacherous passages. It's like childsplay to her... equipped with sparkling brilliance, clean double octaves, and perfectly executed leaps.” (Hessische Allgemeine, Kassel, Germany) At the same time, critics frequently comment on her unusual versatility and find equally ...
