First ever reissue of "The Songs", the debut recording by Alan Sondheim& Ritual All 770, originally released on Riverboat Records (laterrecordings appeared on ESP Disk). Recorded in March 1967 and includedon the legendary Nurse With Wound list of experimental recordings, onthis album Alan Sondheim played Electric Guitar, Violin, Flute, Suling,Xylophone, Alto Saxophone, Classical Guitar, Clarinet, Shenai, BassRecorder, Mandolin, So-na, Hawaiian Guitar, Koto, Sopranino Recorder,Chimta, Cor Anglais, Sitar and Bansari.Joined by Barry Sugarman (Tabla, Dholak & Naquerra), Chris Mattheson(Bass), Robert Poholek (Trumpet & Cornet), Ruth Ann Hutchinson (Vocals),June Fellows (Vocals) and J.Z. (Jazz Drums); Ritual All 770 were a groupof improvisors living in Providence, Rhode Island. (Perhaps they couldbe considered the sonic forebearers of the Fort Thunder scene...)Rejecting the notion that avant garde music was solely the realm ofisolated academia, they delved fearlessly and joyously into theirmusic, creating a work that sounds fresh nearly 40 years later.FROM THE LINER NOTES:This work is a single improvised performance in which one of theperformers sings "Oratorio on the end of illusions", although, inmy libretto the words were originally "Oratorio on the end of visions". A libretto of eight pages was prepared. The vocalistswere not told how to sing it. They could go backward or repeatany section if they wanted to. There was no score. The only instruction given to the instrumentalists was this: no playingbehind the koto or classical guitar. I had several rehearsals witheach of them, mostly individually. The session lasted through twotakes, this is the second. After the master was made, I addedreverberation and volume controlling; other than that, all of themusic heard here is from the live performance.Note: This CD was mastered using the best available vinyl source.Discography:Cray/Turn, cdrom, 2001Global Report, Damaged Life, Spasm cassette, 1986Flesh, Damaged Life. Melody Gardot My One And Only Thrill CD  (2009)

CD $12.09  4.5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples (MP3 Available for Download)
Although the plaudits for Melody Gardot's debut album, WORRISOME HEART, were entirely justified, it sometimes seemed as if the young singer-songwriter's compelling personal story--hit by a car and severely injured at the age of 19, the aspiring fashion designer began playing piano and writing songs as part of her physical therapy--overshadowed her music. Gardot's second album, MY ONE AND ONLY THRILL, dispells that sense entirely: this gorgeous collection of lavishly orchestrated jazz-pop ballads is the work of a genuinely talented singer-songwriter. Gardot's melodic sense is greatly matured: opening track "Baby I'm A Fool" and "Lover ...

Gerald Wilson Detroit CD  (2009)

CD $14.29  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Detroit comprises a six-composition suite commissioned for the 2009 thirtieth anniversary Detroit International Jazz Festival, played in the studio with musicians from composer/arranger Gerald Wilson's Los Angeles home or New York City area. Curiously, there are no Motor City-based players on the disc, but the themes are based in certain locales from the industrial Midwestern City that has fallen on hard economic times but played a pivotal role in the development of Wilson's highly developed skills as a composer, arranger, and bandleader. A quite spirited and energetic music is heard here from the 90-year-old Wilson, whose charm and wit would rival anyone many decades his junior. It's a swinging affair molded in the traditional big-band visage of Count Basie, Ernie Wilkins, or early Quincy Jones, with Wilson's deft touch for embellishing the blues. Players like trumpeter Sean Jones, son/guitarist Anthony Wilson, violinist Yvette Devereaux, the fine pianist Brian O'Rourke, and particularly L.A. alto saxophonist and flutist Randall Willis or Kamasi Washington on tenor sax, spice up the band's ensemble and solo contributions. The suite begins with "Blues on Belle Isle," a bopping tribute to the riverside playground and picnic area Detroiter's depend on to relax and escape from their troubles. The vaunted school for many jazz legends over the years, a dedication ...

Michael Buble It's Time CD  (2005)

Songs MP3 Album
CD $10.05  4.6 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Michael Buble's third major US release (including the mostly live COME FLY WITH ME) stays on message--this young Canadian loves the lush, swaying music of his parents' and grandparents' generations. Buble's albums, however, are much more than mere back-in-the-day exercises. The production and arranging of David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban) is eclectic in a way that firmly places the tunes at the dawn of the 21st century, and, more importantly, Buble possesses the chops and sense of style to re-imagine the adult-contemporary vocal genre in a distinctive manner. In addition to standards by Gershwin and Porter, Buble embraces a variety of sounds, from Motown ("How Sweet It Is") to bossa nova ("Quando, Quando, Quando" with Nelly Furtado) to the Beatles ("Can't Buy Me Love" with a "She Loves You" tag). With his smooth croon and charming persona, Buble is a natural performer, and, for fans of fearlessly romantic and infectiously swinging music, IT'S TIME is a sure bet. Recording information: Capitol Studios, Hollywood, CA; Chartmaker Studios; Henson Recording; Paramount Studios, Hollywood, CA; Record Plant; Signet Sound; Village Recorder, West Los Angeles, CA; Warner Bros. Snarky Puppy World Is Getting Smaller CD  (2007)

A FEW WORDS OF PRAISE:"Killin'" -Victor Wooten (Bela Fleck)"Some incredible sh*t. That's some futuristic sh*t." -Bobby Sparks (Marcus Miller, Roy Hargrove)BIO:Hailing from the unassuming Texas town that produced Roy Orbison, The Eagles, Brave Combo, and Blood, Sweat, & Tears, Snarky Puppy is spreading its infectious blend of jazz, soul, and world music to an audience hungry for something creative and inspiring. Made up entirely of past and present music students from the highly esteemed University of North Texas (affectionately referred to as "the Juilliard of the South"), the band effortlessly blends a strong sense of musicality and virtuosity with raw, organic musical instincts. The 9-piece group is doing something very relevant, and something very honest- they're making music as a generation immersed in diversity. Bjork, Dave Holland, D'Angelo, Wayne Krantz, Pat Metheny, Lettuce, and Radiohead resonate within the compositions to form the unified, unique, soulful sound that is unmistakably Snarky Puppy. The group was formed in 2004 by award-winning bassist and composer Michael League, and immediately gained the support of a large, diverse audience. Snarky Puppy was signed by the very progressive S.I.T.M.O.M. Records in fall of 2005, and subsequently recorded and released their first studio record, The Only Constant, in winter of 2006. The CD has been very well received by the music industry's top musicians and representatives ("...beautifully written, arranged, produced, and played by all..." "tasty percussion and drums, warm bass lines, clean, lovely Rhodes work, excellent horn arranging and clean phrasing abound." -TAXI A&R / "There's some serious passion in these guys' playing..." "This is beautiful music," "Heavy writing... watch out for these guys," -legendary New Orleans drummer Johnny Vidacovich / "Incredible... Snarky Puppy is happening," -jazz bassist Marc Johnson) and has created a serious buzz among musicians and non-musicians alike. The members of Snarky Puppy have performed with some of the biggest names in jazz and popular music, including Victor Wooten, Dave Brubeck, Eddie ...

Jon Ballantyne 4tets CD  (2007)

CD $11.49
2007 Juno Award winner, Saskatchewan born and New York-based jazz pianist Jon Ballantyne started playing piano at a very early age, and began formal study at the age of six. His father is also a pianist and both parents’ jazz enthusiasts; therefore Jon was hearing the recordings of greats such as Lenny Breau, Oscar Peterson, Miles Davis, Bill Evans and Duke Ellington from the beginning of his life. After the early years of absorbing his father's blues-based approach to piano, classical piano studies, and a stint in a garage rock band as a young teenager, Jon realized his passion and decided to more thoroughly investigate the art form of jazz. This quest led to his winning of a scholarship to attend first Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario, followed by classes at the University of Saskatchewan, and finally another scholarship to attend North Texas State University. As an honours student at NTSU, Jon was asked to and did play with in small group formats with visiting artists such as Elvin Jones, Ron Carter, Michael Brecker, Joe Henderson, Emily Remler and Nat Adderley. Jon hit it off particularly well with Joe Henderson and would, just three years later, reunite with Henderson to record in Montreal (with the rhythm section made up of fellow Canadians Jerry Fuller and Neil Swainson) what has become a Canadian jazz classic-“Sky Dance” (Justin Time) which won a Juno award in 1990.In the mid-eighties, Jon attended jazz workshops at the Banff Center of the Arts in Alberta, Canada; studying and playing with Kenny Wheeler, Don Thompson, Phil Nimmons, Dave Holland, Dave Liebman, Ed Blackwell, Lee Konitz, Cecil Taylor, John Abercrombie, Karl Berger, and Steve Coleman. Fellow students in Banff included Mike Murley, Perry White, Hugh Fraser and Michael Blake, to name a few. At this time, he also studied in NYC with Barry Harris, Kenny Barron, Hal Galper and JoAnn Brackeen. This period of intensive study naturally led to a performance career, and Jon often shared (and shares) the stage or recording studio with some of the world's finest musicians, including, as mentioned previously, Joe Henderson, as well as Roy Haynes, Paul Bley, Dewey Redman, Don Thompson, Dave Liebman, Billy Hart, Gene Jackson, Ben Street, Mick Goodrick, Scott Colley, Reid Anderson, Craig Handy, George Garzone, Ed Bickert, Phil Dwyer, Yannick Rieu, Pepper Adams , Kevin Dean, Mike Allen, Terry Clarke, P.J. Perry, Andre White, Drew Gress, Charles Fambrough, Rich Perry, Benny Wallace, Ray Drummond, Ben Perowsky, The Mingus Big Band, Woody Herman's Thundering Herd, Clark Terry, Al Cohn, Red Mitchell, Jimmy Guiffre, Shorty Rodgers, Buddy DeFranco and Joe Lovano. Traveling often, Jon has performed in eight European countries, the UK, Japan, most provinces and major jazz festivals in Canada, and more than 40 states in the USA.As a six-year resident of Park Slope, Brooklyn in the 90's, Jon also played countless jam sessions in his studio apartment with young musicians, most of them neighbors, such as Seamus Blake, Mark Turner, Owen Howard, Donny McAslin, Bill Carrothers, Hugh Sicotte, John McKenna, Dave Pietro, Tony Scherr, Johaness Viedenmueller and Matt Wilson. As an educator, Jon has conducted master classes at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, and at many universities in Canada and the USA. Over the years, he has played several mini-concerts and conducted workshops at elementary and high schools in Saskatoon, the city in which he grew up and manages to visit at least twice a year.In the 21st Century, Jon ...
