Like a soft drone lapping at pockets of silence, these soft, drifty, slighly melancholy and reserved piano songs , seem to sway and float with a bigger entity, a larger arc of life's progression .Lush and haunting musical landscapes, blending contemporary electric and indigenous acoustic instrument.« Closer to the heart » lives up to its name with twelve delightful tracks encompassing the smart writing of classical music, the sophistication of jazz and the mellow, accessible vibe of new age.Piano music of great tenderness and beauty; shimmering melodies, penetrating rhythms that are sumptuous and elegant.At their best, well-written, expertly-executed songs or melodies do more than just tell a story - they pose important questions. On Closer to the heart, his second full-length for Ambient-New Age, Belgian songwriter/Composer Mike De Filette ( Mike°d ) approaches the sometimes difficult but universal topics of introspection, identity and love with bravery, honesty, and above all, stunning beauty. These songs aren't all about Mike's personal experience, however. This departure into the fictitious is only the first of numerous artistic stretches from 2005's Through my eyes . Making a concerted effort to remove hiself from a comfort zone, the Belgian went so far as to pack his bags and work on the new album amidst the hustle and heat of Belgian's countryside. Mike°d may have already sounded angelic before recording Through my Eyes, but the bold resolution in his composing this time around was certainly born of the strength he gained taking chances. "I felt that in order to push myself musically, I would have to take myself outside of what is familiar," Mike°d , who approached his songwriting technique and composing delivery using a fresh methodology during the recording process, explains. His intense focus and admirable openness paid off: from the palpably raw explorations of learning to love on " Closer to the heart" to his warm piano play on "Midsummer Daydream ", If Songs Could Be Held exists as Mike's masterwork, painted with a bright and dynamic emotional palette. THE ELECTRIC DISTANT SURFACING (released October 2000, Cosmic Vending Machine CVM001). An amalgam of primary elements and colors, an initial mission statement, an homage to the psychedelic fusion of Lifetime and early Mahavishnu, a chance of a lifetime to work with the legendary Mo-zone -- Tom McCarthy's first album was conceived as all of these things. Recorded on a shoestring with the loving contributions of Tom's colleagues from the Boston production of Blue Man Group, the centerpiece of the disc is the inspired interaction of McCarthy and drummer Bob Moses, who lends his African-inspired healing vibrations of sound to the project. Spiritual guide, mystic and musical pioneer, Moses continually expands the form and sonic scope of the five compositions from McCarthy, which journey through inner and outer reaches close to the hearts of both musicians -- the incandescent solar fields of mid- to late-Coltrane. The openning track, "Mark of Cain" (a title echoing McCarthy's own sense of wandering in search of the Source of One-ness), ushers forth with a Coltrane-ish modal melody and a corruscating guitar solo through which Moses conjures ecstatic peaks of sound as McCarthy casts a knowing glance in the direction of Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, and Albert Ayler. Receding from this highly-charged field, the band moves toward the psychedelic, dark ambient territory that is the diurnal, lunar compliment to the solar flares kindled by Moses in the other sections. The sound of Jimi Hendrix, the Hendrix of the Saturnalian blues and sonic journeys of "A Merman I Should Turn to Be", is clearly on McCarthy's mind, as are the compositional structures and elliptical melodies of Wayne Shorter (in "Dissolving In Orchid") and the visceral white noise and heat of Tony Williams' Lifetime and mid-70's King Crimson (in "Everything Is").
