It took years for this Tommy Tune musical to reach disc, during which time one of the leads, David Carroll, died (he is remembered in a club performance of one of the songs, included as a bonus track). But most of the rest of the principals -- Liliane Montevecchi, Karen Akers, Michael Jeter -- are here, making the most of this musical adaptation of the famous movie about a hotel in Berlin in the 20s. The score, by Robert Wright and George Forrest, with significant additions by Maury Yeston, is not the show's strong point (the staging and choreography were what made it a hit), but it gives a good sense of the story and is true to the original source. ~ William Ruhlmann

Sylvia Cuenca is an active young drummer on the New York jazz scene who is contributing outstanding performances in a variety of situations. Over the years, she has performed extensively at festivals and jazz clubs nationally as well as internationally. She has performed,toured and recorded with many jazz luminaries including trumpet legend Clark Terry and saxophonist Joe Henderson. As a sideman, she has performed with Eddie Henderson, Billy Taylor, Kenny Barron, Frank Foster, Dianne Reeves, Ed Cherry, Jon Faddis, Dave Stryker and Vincent Herring to name a few. In 1988 and 1991, she received jazz performance grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1992, she was a semi-finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Drum Competition. In 2002, she performed with her quartet at the 45th Monterey Jazz Festival. She has released two recording as a leader, "The Crossing and "Exit 13". In 2004, the first track of "EXIT 13" was used in an episode of HBO's "Sex and the City". Ms. Cuenca endorses Zildjian Cymbals, Vic Firth Sticks and Regal Tip Brushes exclusively.
