Pretty Little Mountain
$15.65 Not that anyone's keeping score, but as Band alumni records go, Levon is pulling way ahead of the pack with his second keeper in as many tries in the '00s. ELECTRIC DIRT finds the Arkansas legend building on its critically acclaimed predecessor, DIRT FARMER, and bringing the democratic ebullience of his weekly Midnight Ramble live sessions (held in his barn) to record. Ramble ...

| | Joni Mitchell Ladies Of The Canyon CD (1970)
Pretty Little Mountain
$8.65 On songs like, "Conversation" and the title cut, Mitchell's lyrics begin to turn toward to the quirky, personal poetry of interior landscapes, focusing with a writer's eye on scene, detail, and the dynamics of human relationships. Her instrumental palette is broadened too, with colorful, textured arrangements that make greater use of piano, as well as strings, reeds, electric keyboards, and percussion. Some songs, like the sweet, chiming "The Circle Game," seem a bit naďve, but these are counterbalanced with darker songs like "The Arrangement," ...
| | Randy Scruggs Crown Of Jewels CD (1998)
Pretty Little Mountain
$6.09 "A Soldier's Joy" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental Performance. "Lonesome Ruben" was nominated for the same award.
CROWN OF JEWELS is aptly named--every track is a gem. Randy Scruggs, son of legendary banjo player Earl Scruggs, is a top songwriter, producer and instrumentalist who's worked with, well, everyone. For CROWN OF JEWELS, he called in favors right and left to assemble an all-star cast, and they've created what sounds like the world's hippest country/rock mix tape.
Guests include Trisha Yearwood, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Vince Gill, Travis Tritt, Rosanne Cash, Bruce Hornsby, Joan Osborne and John Prine. Much of the material is brand new, but even old chestnuts like "Amie" and "Wildwood Flower" get new spins--the latter song is the first recorded duet between Emmylou Harris and Iris Dement, for example. A definite highlight is the Dylanesque rocker "Passin' Through," a duet between Scruggs and Osborne. But ...

| | Joan Baez How Sweet The Sound CD (2009)
Pretty Little Mountain
$13.79 To accompany the documentary film JOAN BAEZ: HOW SWEET THE SOUND, soundtrack producer Mark Spector assembled this hourlong compilation album. The film itself is biographical, with only snippets of performances, but here full-length tracks have been drawn from the albums JOAN BAEZ IN SAN FRANCISCO, ONE DAY AT A TIME, BESSED ARE..., CARRY IT ON, and LIVE AT NEWPORT, as well as the BBC documentary JOAN BAEZ IN CONCERT and the NBC TV special HARD RAIN. Previously unreleased are a couple of tracks recorded at Club 47 in Boston in 1958 ("I Never Will Marry" and "Barbara Allen") and four concluding tracks recorded on Baez's 2008-2009 tour supporting her album DAY ...
| | Neil Zaza Staring At The Sun CD (2001)
Pretty Little Mountain
$16.05 Neil Zaza comes from the school of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. The thing is, he has learned his lesson well enough to bring into question who should be the teacher and who the student. Indeed, Zaza's sound encompasses that classic rock textured guitar instrumental type of music. It does, however, seem to have an energy and enthusiasm that are sometimes missing from the aforementioned guitarists' work. It has all the technical skill, but with a wonderful taste and fire that are sometimes lacking in the music of Vai and Satriani. Zaza is not tied to just those two guitarists for inspiration, though; from time to time you might hear sounds that call to mind musicians such as Edgar Winter, Steve Howe, and Carlos Santana. Add to that mix the killer Journey rhythm section of Steve Smith and Ross Valory and you can really see what makes this disc such a special work. Among the highlights of the CD is a wonderful take on Prince's "Purple Rain," with the guitar taking the vocal line on this instrumental arrangement. If your taste runs ...
