Artam El-Arab album
$12.09 The very first moments of Rodrigo y Gabriela's sophomore effort, 11:11, hit the listener cold in the face, and not just because of the amazing guitar playing. Sure, it's there, but it's what anyone who heard the duo's astonishing debut would ...

| | Odd Nosdam Level Live Wires: Special Edition CDs (2007)
Artam El-Arab album
$13.09 David Madson's Odd Nosdam turns his Level Live Wires album "On" with a wash of synths, then turns it "Off" precisely 40 minutes later in the same fashion. In between times, the sample master and found sound maestro entrances listeners with a collage of sounds, rhythms, and melodies, that coalesce into some of the most intriguing music you'll ever hear. Some of it's short and sharp, like "Blast," which seems to circle around a fuzzy radio wave emanating from the '60s, a blast from rock's past indeed. Others float off on warm, dozy thermals of synths, like "Fat Hooks," soaring ever higher on heavenly vocals. "The Kill Tone Two" is its urban version, which adds violin and rap vocals. "Burner," in contrast, is as aggressive as they come, built around a looped blaring horn, which, with the percussive booms and breaking glass, is actually the sound of a burning car, and Nosdam transforms it into an off-kilter piece, quavering with threat and anxiety, much like being caught ...

| | Masters Of The Accordion CD (2004)
Artam El-Arab music CDs
$22.09 An outstanding album of accordion music from around the world, this single-disc compilation from ARC is perhaps even a rival to the much harder to find Planet Squeezebox on Ellipsis. The album centers to some degree on artists from the ARC roster, but there's a good deal of licensed material from small independent labels in the U.S. and Europe alike. The rounds begin with tango artist Hugo Diaz and a bit of nuevo tango before moving into a more subdued Macedonian piece and a work for the French diatonic accordion. Enrique Ugarte plays a nice tropical-sounding piece on a standard accordion. Mohsen Allaam (hailing from an earlier Hossam Ramzy album) adds in a piece for the Egyptian quarter tone with a nice darbukka beat, followed by a medley of Irish tunes and a medley of Bulgarian dance forms. The great Maria Kalaniemi contributes a jumping Finnish tune, and the well-known Renato Borghetti adds in a tango of sorts via Brazil. Vitaliy Bezrodnov makes the accordion ...

Artam El-Arab songs
$9.99 USA: XLR8R: "... There's some nice downtempo with jazzy kit work and even some delicate drum & bass on the b, but a1 is what I'm feeling. "The Land of the Rising Sun" pairs a crisp, uptempo broken beat with minor-chord keys under heavy compression and reverb to make a solid tune with a spacey, 3 a.m vibe."USA: Groundlift Magazine: " Baseheadz is actually Satiesh Mathoera, a Dutch electronica producer who garnered a bit of dap from his CD entitled Baseheadz & Beyond and an earlier 12". On this new joint, Mathoera touches on a number of styles with aplomb. “Land of the Rising Sun” represents for the dancefloor, contrasting broken beat drum patterns with spaced-out rhodes chords and a muscular synth bassline. “The Scratch Mechanic (Raw as Hell mix)” is evidently a grittier remix of a cut that appeared on his album. The moody guitar-esque tones and synth melodies are cool, but the real story is the drums, which pound with overdriven low end and clanging rides. Their organic sound offsets the electronic keyboard sounds nicely. “Nitron” takes it back to the “intelligent” drum and bass days with light drums, blissful synth squiggles and dreamy pads, while “She Waved to Me” puts it down for the late night chillers with a sexy, cocktail-sipping groove. " USA: Slackline Radio: "The 12" maxi single release from Baseheadz includes a nice re-release of The Scratch Mechanic as well as three other well produced tracks. Of course, it is true in the style of Baseheadz and is a nice mix of some downbeats like She Waved to Me and some more uptempo dance vibes like Nitron. Be sure to get your copy along with a stylin' sweatshirt from Mental Recordings."UK: ...
