Putumayo Kids, an offshoot of the Putumayo clothing company's internationally inspired music label, here presents a relaxing collection of Celtic airs that are intended to soothe and reassure listeners of all ages. Scotland is represented by Mairi MacInnes, Dougie MacLean, Karen Matheson, and the duo of Mairi Campbell and Dave Francis, known to BBC Scotland radio audiences as the Cast. Irish participants are Susan McKeown, Lasairfhiona Ni Chonaola, harpist Aine Minogue, and Seamus Egan, co-founder of the group Solas. Mary Jane Lamond is Scottish by way of her native Cape Breton, and Teresa Doyle of Prince Edward Island has produced numerous releases on her own Bedlam music label. Most of the songs on Celtic Dreamland are sung in gentle tones that suggest the lullaby or the berceuse, with Dougie MacLean's "Goodnight and Joy" registering as most definitively fey. For instrumental medicine, go directly to Aine Minogue's "The Dove's Return" and Seamus Egan's "When Juniper Sleeps." ~ arwulf arwulf

Celtic Dreamland CD music
$10.05 The percentage of Americans who are weary of the standard roster of Christmas songs--"Silent Night" and "Joy to the World," among others--is probably quite large. For some listeners, a lifetime of hearing these songs ad infinitum has begun to take its toll. Fortunately, the 20th century has seen a bumper crop of seasonal standards. Some of these tunes lack the ...

Celtic Dreamland music CDs
$12.69 AO55 is a Virginia-based power duo that blends the honesty of American roots rock and the sentiment of alt-country with quirky storytelling.10 Frequently Asked Questions about AO55:1. What do an alien wearing a baseball cap, a llama, a voyeur, a Salvation Army Santa, a girl voted least likely to succeed, riot police, two blondes in leopard-skin tights, a uniform laundry worker, and a dog in a dream have in common? They all make appearances in Spaghetti Western Complex, AO55's debut.2. What is AO55?AO55 is a northern Virginia/DC-based power band who swerved off the pop highway onto the back roads of American roots rock, alt-country and acoustic. It is also a muscle relaxant, a poke in the eye and a ticket for a long bus ride. It remains to be seen if the band gets all 4 wheels back on the highway.3. Who is AO55?The band is Jimmy Sparks and Tom Grome, with more than a little help from their friends J.P. Maheu and Chris Wellborn (see credits below). 4. So what exactly is wrong with you guys? We're psychotic. And we like to tell stories....stories about strange, funny, sad, deluded, whack, genuine people.5. What's with the band name?AO55 is the room number of the band's rehearsal space. We went through a boatload of names. {Sigh} Maybe we'll post some of the rejects on the website.(Or maybe we won't.) We came up with lots of twisted, irrelevant names. In the end we wanted a namethat meant something to us. Since we spend a lot of time and creative energy at AO55, we went with that.6. Who writes the songs? The songs were all conceived and written by Jimmy and Tom or Tom and Jimmy. We have a true collaboration. Sometimes Jimmy will have some music and Tom will do the lyrics. Sometimes it'll be the other way around. But for most songs, we sit and work out music and lyrics together- trading ideas as the song evolves.7. Where did Spaghetti Western Complex come from? The little green man. Actually, we had this "loping llama" rhythm going and Jimmy started singing over it. We sat down and put in a loose story line that evokes some of the Clint Eastwood movies, but is set in modern times.8. So are you guys fixated on Texas or what?Apparently we are. It's a big state.9. What did you do before AO55?We played in One Party Rule, a fixture on the DC power pop scene in the mid-1990s. The band released two CDs: One Party Rule (Antithesis Records,Columbia, SC) and Pickles for Porcupines (Blue Frog). The band garnered modestradio airplay in Europe in the late 1990s. 10. So is that THE legendary J.P. Maheu on guitar and at the mixing board? The one and only. JP has worked with numerous DC bands, including Pietasters. He also did some live recording with folk legend Pete Seeger.ALBUM CREDITS:All songs written by Tom Grome and Jimmy Sparks (BMI)AO55 is:Jimmy Sparks: Lead and backing vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, drums, percussion, harmonicaTom Grome: Piano, organ, synthesizers, backing vocals, percussionAdditional musicians:J.P. | | Weekend La Variete CD (1982) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Reissue; United Kingdom
Celtic Dreamland songs
$14.79 The airy arrangements and exotic rhythms throughout La Varieté sound like low-budget approximations of Antonio Carlos Jobim, although "A Life in the Day Of...Pt. 1 & 2" is a stab at African high life, and "Nostalgia" minus the vocals could be one of U2's early instrumental B-sides. In short, the album is nothing like what you would expect from former Young Marble Giants vocalist Alison Statton, excepting the song "Drum Beat for Baby," which mimics the unique sound of her previous band. Interestingly, Young Marble Giants' main man Stuart Moxham has nothing to do with that track, but he and his brother Phil contribute a couple of compositions, one of which is the Gist's ...
