Mauritanaia is a neighbor to Mali, and that's been to its detriment. The musical spotlight has focused heavily on the rich variety of Malian styles, and the country's excellent musicians, while Mauritania has largely been ignored. This won't do much to make any new stars, however, since it's a CD of field recordings made in 1978 by ethnomusicologist Deben Bhattacharya. The focus is on griots, the hereditary caste who are the music makers and historians of society. And these really are field recordings, often made in the desert, and captured completely raw, down to the asides and the coughing. It's certainly not for anyone seeking background entertainment, since it demands a lot from the listener. But the sounds of the harp called the ardin, the tidinit lute, and the t'bol drum can be quite magical, while the male singers don't have the high, mullah grace of their counterparts in West Africa, tending instead toward a roughness that reflects their surroundings. It's an interesting, if dated, document, even if the insight it offers into Mauritania in general is limited. ~ Chris Nickson

Recorded in 1960 & 1963. Originally released on RCA (2276) & RCA (2750). This discount-priced two-fer CD combines Miriam Makeba's self-titled debut album, first released in 1960, with her third LP, The World of Miriam Makeba, which appeared originally in 1963. (Both of these albums were on RCA Victor and have been leased from BMG Special Products; in between came 1962's The Many Voices of Miriam Makeba, on Kapp Records, now in the catalog of Universal.) Makeba, who had escaped South African apartheid to develop a career as a nightclub singer, brought a great deal of her homeland to her repertoire, though she also sang in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, and drew on songs from all over the world. Especially on the songs from her first album (tracks one through 14), you can hear RCA, using Harry Belafonte's producer, conductor, and backup singers, and bringing in such guests as the Chad Mitchell Trio, trying to develop a distaff version of Belafonte, someone just exotic enough to give Western listeners the flavor of a foreign culture, but not so much as to make them feel disoriented. The World of Miriam Makeba has even more of a pop feel, courtesy of a production by Hugo & Luigi. But, although the music may be culturally compromised, there is still enough of Makeba's own authenticity to keep things from turning into either ...

Recorded live at Lila Eule, Bremen, Germany on January 19, 1973. Includes liner notes by Mike Fowler. Travelling Somewhere consists of a concert recorded by Radio Bremen (Germany) on January 19, 1973, one week before the Chris McGregor & the Brotherhood of Breath show in Switzerland that would be released on Ogun in 1974 as Live at Willisau. The pianist's modern big band was in top shape, with a lineup that blended original Blue Notes players (Dudu Pukwana, Mongezi Feza, and Louis Moholo) with the best avant-garde jazz talents in London at the time (Harry Beckett, Mark Charig, Nick Evans, Harry Miller, Evan Parker, Gary Windo, Malcolm Griffiths, and Mike Osborne). Total: three trumpets, two trombones, four saxophones, piano, bass, and drums. Each musician is a creative force by himself. Together they played an overwhelming maelstrom of free jazz. The keyword here is untamed. Yes, they follow compositions, but their liberty is wide and wild. Just listen to Pukwana's "The Bride"; a melody has been written, but it is being played from all angles. Sound quality is very good, the only irritating factor being McGregor's piano, which sounds awful, out of tune, honky tonky, and deep in the mix. But the pianist's role was not central to this outfit and the glorious horns cover the instrument's flaws. "MRA" starts surprisingly sloppy (was everyone ready?), but things coalesce quickly and from this point on the energy level remains high. These players were having fun, as can be heard on "Travelling ...

On the second full-length Gorillaz outing, DEMON DAYS, mastermind Damon Albarn (Blur) parts company with Dan the Automator and opts for a collaboration with Danger Mouse, the DJ most renowned for his GREY ALBUM mash-up of the Beatles' WHITE ALBUM and Jay-Z's BLACK ALBUM. Although this dynamic collection isn't a radical departure from its predecessor (Artwork by Jamie Hewlett? Check. A small army of guest stars? Check.), DEMON DAYS injects the party-ready Gorillaz aesthetic with a brooding sensibility that's immediately apparent on the zombie-movie-sampling "Intro." In fact, a morbid sentiment abounds, as evidenced by many songs, including "Last Living Souls" and "Every Planet We Reach Is Dead." Even though Albarn has weighty issues occupying his thoughts, he hasn't forgotten how to boogie, as revealed by the slinky "Kids with Guns" (featuring backing vocals by Neneh Cherry) and the funky "Feel Good Inc." (with De La Soul), which sounds like the slacker cousin of Outkast's "Hey Ya!" The ...

This 1973 album--long a treasured rarity on vinyl--comprises the entire output of German hard-rockers Sperrmull. A freewheeling sense of musical joy is infused into every track, from the spirited bluesy jam of the album opener, "Me and My Girlfriend," to the skittery drums and stuttering guitar blasts of the nine-minute epic "Right Now," to the majestic and decidedly proggy "No Freak Out." The intensity and promise of this debut makes one wonder what might have been if the band had continued. The 2007 CD release on Brain contains interesting bilingual liner notes that detail the trajectory of the band members after their mid-'70s breakup.
