Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. DRY serves as an introduction to Harvey's fierce guitar--which at times recalls the front porches of the Delta--and highly visual lyrical angle that picks at the scabs of female iconography. The band's debut release is an impressive collection of songs that manages to capture the energy and power of their live shows. The CD's second track, "19," is so good that it's easy to kill a weekend just listening to that song alone. Gage's keyboard sounds are exceptionally original and he manages to come up with parts that make the songs unpredictable and exciting. The group's self-released, self-titled disc is one of several aiming to revitalize the musical movement. The album is a mixture of moods and sneaks in more textures than what initially meets the ear. While starting the disc off with the usual sleazy, oversexed mosher anthem, "Poetic Sex," (6) doesn't base every song around mook. More interesting sonic textures come into the fray and make the over-distorted guitars part of the ensemble instead of fighting in the forefront. "Seven," a track featuring guest vocals by Lack Halo's Randy Kish, is the beginning of the album's ascension. The best songs on the disc come afterward, as (6) explore creepy, more sublime territory on "Beneath the End," and continue the more eerie tones throughout on "Sucker," and "Broken Lie."
