Each volume in Water Music/Varese's Pure Trance series of compilations crams as many drastically edited versions of trance singles possible, just so they can boast about their "18 Chart-Topping Dance Floor Hits!" As with a lot of dance compilations, a high quantity of tracks on the disc -- especially when unmixed -- puts the listener at a disadvantage, since most dance tracks aren't designed for the three- to four-minute format. Moby's "In This World," the Deepsky remix of Carl Cox's "Phuture 2000," Kaze's "The Voice," and Kate Ryan's "Only if I" are featured on the fourth volume, another disc that contains a few memorable cuts with plenty of nondescript filler. ~ Andy Kellman It's been a good run, but this really probably ought to be the final volume in the Water Music label's Pure Trance series. If you want them all, go for the budget-priced box set that includes all four volumes, and best wishes to you. Everyone else will get by fine with one or two of the individual discs. Of those, the fourth is perhaps the most unapologetically utilitarian; the beats are all inexorable and high powered, and the sweet piano and synthesized-strings environment for those beats is unusually consistent throughout -- if you can really hear a substantive difference between, say, Wavetraxx's "Peace," Nathan Profit's "Acceleration," and Ron Van Den Beuken's "Timeless," then you're probably spending way, way too much time listening to dance music. "Energy," by Zenith DJ with the Energy Squad, distinguishes itself from the rest of the program by means of unbelievably annoying fake tracking glitches, and Moby is the class of the program, as usual, with his clubwise appropriation ...
