With ALL IN ONE, Bebel Gilberto made her home at Verve, which is not just an auspicious label for music but also the home of some of the best Brazilian records of all time--by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto (who is no relation, although she was married to Bebel's father before Bebel's birth), Stan Getz, and, of course, her father, Joao Gilberto. It's obvious Gilberto is well aware of this: the cover is reminiscent of an Astrud Gilberto album and she sings a version of "Bim Bom," which was written by her father and is known popularly for Astrud's version (what's more, it features the piano work of Brazilian royalty Dan Jobim). Still, it's clear Bebel Gilberto knows where to draw the line, and ALL IN ONE is defined more by her songs and her collaborators than the weight of Brazilian musical history that she must carry. Multi-percussionist Carlinhos Brown gets the most instrument credits (his kit bag must weigh a ton), and his string of percussion instruments brings a rich texture to every song he graces. (He also co-wrote the best new songs, "Nossa Senhora" and "Ela [On My Way].") Also appearing is superstar producer Mark Ronson for the single "The Real Thing," a song whose history hits a sweet spot here--Stevie Wonder originally wrote it in the late '70s for Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77. Ronson takes the song back to Wonder's Motown roots, also quoting from Saint Etienne's vibrant update of classic soul production. This double-disc set issued by Music Brokers is partially what it says it is: bossa nova versions of Rolling Stones tunes. Even as a novelty this is stretching it -- why would any real bossa artist want to cover the Rolling Stones? In any case, a slew of minor bossa acts did sign up, and came up with some interesting versions of Stones cuts. Examples of these are Karen Souza's "Wild Horses," the Amazonics' "Let's Spend the Night Together," Anakelly's "Under My Thumb," and Urban Love's "Beast of Burden." There's also a ton of electronica here, and some of it is big booty bass like the Favela remix of "The Harlem Shuffle" by Marvin or Dual Sessions' dubby remix of "Ruby Tuesday." Unfortunately, most of the cuts here are like these last two, and have little to nothing to do with bossa. It's a come on. Ultimately, this set is for novelty freaks only. ~ Thom Jurek

Brazilian MPB star Maria Rita changed direction for her third album, Samba Meu, which, as its title ("My Samba") makes clear, is a samba collection. As on her previous albums, the warmly received Maria Rita (2003) and Segundo (2005), the musical arrangements are acoustic and jazzy, with first-rate production quality. Also like her previous albums, Samba Meu is comprised of excellent songs all around -- just cue up the album and press play, it's that easy; no need to skip even a single track. The highlights are sequenced early: the opening stretch -- from the album-opening title track to the sixth track, "Tá Perdoado" -- is fantastic and lively. The album begins to slow down in pace with "Pra Declarar Minha Saudade" (the seventh track), and this second half of the album is enjoyable in its own way, a nice come-down from the exhilarating opening stretch. Samba Meu is another great album by Rita, even if, like Segundo, it falls short of Maria Rita, which had been close to perfect. ~ Jason Birchmeier
