Pegadinhas Do Mucao Vol. 3-Pegadinhas Do Mucao
$9.59 Recorded in 1965 and produced by Bobby Scott, Braziliana is the first American collaborative effort between Brazilian composer and guitarist Luiz Bonfá and his wife, vocalist Maria Toledo. The set consists of 14 Bonfá originals and highlights every aspect of his compositional landscape, from sambas to jazzy pop songs, neo-classical pieces for guitar, and his modern attempts to integrate Brazilian folk forms. Certainly there was an ulterior motive for Philips recording this album with Scott -- the worldwide success of Astrud and Joao Gilberto's collaborations with Stan Getz. His arrangements lend a certain modern jazz tenet to some of these tunes -- such as the beautiful"Cavaquinho," with Toledo scatting ever so elegantly amid a small jazz combo that features ...

Guided, perhaps, by musical snobbery or roots-rock phobia, some people inexplicably don't like Creedence Clearwater Revival. As the kings of earnest country-inflected rock in an age when radical stances were de rigueur, CCR sported straight-ahead tunes, and may have seemed a bit unhip. But their music stands the test of time with a vengeance. For the doubtful listener, this outstanding, 20-track hits collection has evidence of their greatness in staggering abundance.
Though they produced several excellent albums, Creedence was predominantly a singles band, and CHRONICLE compiles many of their biggest hits. From the slowly building saunter of "Suzie Q" and the spooky, R&B-soaked "I Put a Spell on You" to the fierce "Fortunate Son" and the swampy blues of "Run Through the Jungle," CHRONICLE features the ensemble's signature tunes. Beautifully melancholy songs "Who'll Stop the Rain" and "Someday Never Comes" play off sunny, melodic anthems "Down on the Corner" and "Lookin' Out My Back Door," fully revealing the band's wide range. The group's tight, no-frills musicianship leaves John Fogerty's keening voice and superb songwriting at the fore, and the results--brought together here on one of rock's best greatest-hits packages--make for some of the genre's most endearing and enduring music.
As the kings of earnest country-and-blues-inflected rock in an age when radical stances were de rigueur, CCR sported straight-ahead tunes, and may have seemed a bit unhip at the time. However, their ...
| | Swing Fever Big Band Chicken Ain't Nothin' But A Bird CD (2000) (Import)
Pegadinhas Do Mucao Vol. 3-Pegadinhas Do Mucao
$15.85 The second CD by trombonist Bryan Gould's group Swing Fever once again features Clark Terry as a special guest, as well as the late tenor saxophonist Pee Wee Claybrook (in one of his last recording session, he's on three numbers). The music covers songs that were part of the books of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa, and Fats Waller. Gould's arrangements and trombone are first rate, though Terry threatens to steal the show with his readily identifiable trumpet and fluegelhorn ever time he solos, and his bluesy vocal on "I Want a Little Girl" is a gem. Gould and Terry share the vocals on Calloway's jive number "A Chicken Ain't Nothin' But a Bird" and also on Ellington's "Just a Settin' and A-Rockin'" (incorrectly listed ...
| | Franz Ferdinand Darts Of Pleasure CD (2003)
Pegadinhas Do Mucao Vol. 3-Pegadinhas Do Mucao
$7.39 Although Franz Ferdinand has been hailed as "Scotland's answer to Interpol," their debut EP, Darts of Pleasure, reveals the band as much weirder and wider-ranging than their impeccably dressed American counterparts. Admittedly, the chunky, angular guitars that propel the EP's opening track, "Darts of Pleasure," do sound akin to those on Interpol's "PDA," and Franz Ferdinand's singer, Alex Kapranos, has an insistent baritone voice that recalls both Paul Banks and Ian Curtis. However, it's not likely that Interpol would finish a song with a galloping coda sung in German, as Franz Ferdinand does. The song's surreal sensuality -- displayed in lyrics like "You can feel my lips undress your eyes" -- further separates the band from their contemporaries, as do the rest of the songs on Darts of Pleasure. "Van Tango" celebrates the "king of the night" with a strangely bouncy strut that's part glam rock and part art school, and overall much geekier (in the best possible way) than anything that most of the bands Franz Ferdinand are compared to would create. That goes double for the theatrical, ...
