Musica Popular Grega
$13.99 Bebel Gilberto was nominated for the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist. TANTO TEMPO was nominated for the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best Musica Popular Brasileira Album.
This is a collection of remixes from the TANTO TEMPO album. Remixers include Peter Kruder, Truby Trio, Rae & Christian, King Britt.
Bebel Gilberto is the daughter of Brazilian singer/guitarist Joao Gilberto. TANTO TEMPO, her debut release, brings a contemporary sheen to classic bossa novas. Acoustic accompaniment predominates, with the addition of occasional electronica, making this collection a perfect reflection of the late-20th century two-way street between traditional Brazilian bossa nova and the American ...

| | Lula Cortes Paebiru CD (1975)
Musica Popular Grega
$16.79 Thanks to cult-creating stories about how nearly all original copies of this Brazilian double-album effort from 1975 were lost in a fire, Paebiru is one of those records that has to overcome a reputation -- it has to actually be good because it's good, not because it's rare. The 2005 re-release on Shadoks gave a chance for that concern to be addressed, and it must be said: Paebiru really is a fantastic album. With each of its original four sides named after the legendary four elements (earth, air, fire, water), Paebiru looks to aim high and does so pretty well, but the more telling thing about the album is how well Lula Côrtes and Zé Ramalho's work fits in the present day. Thanks to the continually ...

| | Church Parallel Universe CDs (2002)
Musica Popular Grega
$14.39 The Church runneth over at the start of the new millennium, as Steve Kilbey and the rest of the tenured band released Parallel Universe, not just one but two discs, all of music that has been released before. And then again, it's also all new. The first disc, subtitled "Remixture," contains songs that were worked on during the sessions of the band's preceding After Everything Now This, or as the liner notes claim, "alternate outcomes" of those songs. Not remixes in the strict sense, but that doesn't stop the record from feeling like a remix album; whether that's a Pavlovian reaction or due to the fact that the record isn't a coherent, cohesive unit, an unfortunate reality for most remix discs, is up to the listener to decide. The second disc, entitled "Mixture," is made up of six tracks that were unreleased before this set came out, but culled from the same time frame as the other recordings. This is also quite evident from the familiar feel to the proceedings. To be sure, both discs accentuate the spacy, neo-psychedelic facets of the Church above anything else. This is regrettable in that the loss of the band's pop genius is glaringly missed, a reality that is only partially offset by the move from dated '80s soundscapes to something more contemporary. This is also a continuation from After ...

Musica Popular Grega
$11.15 The fact that there is a dozen people credited for backing vocals on this album, but no one for lead, says a lot. There is actually only one song, "Talkin' About My Love for You," with solo vocals, and the rest are instrumental, sometimes with vocal choruses. This could give a feeling of a karaoke record, but getting used to it one will find the tracks with backing vocals the album's strongest; for example, the introductory "Mighty Love," with the groove slowly building up to an irresistible frenzy. And the extremely skilled ensemble manages to do this trick even when conditions seem really bad, like in "Dance With Me," starting out with lazy synth strings, a bossa rhythm, and quiet backing vocals. When listeners dance to the funky beat at the end of the song, they are likely to have forgotten what it sounded like in the beginning. And Stuff is obviously not about writing durable songs, but doing party music with a highly competent band, and this time including a whole lot of gospel in the jazz-funk. The only time Stuff is disappointing is when they don't raise the tempo. "Rainbows" ...
