| | Damian Marley Mr. Marley CD Damian Marley Discography of CDs
MR. MARLEY was Damian Marley's first release as a solo artist, reissued worldwide after the cross-genre success of his breakthrough album, WELCOME TO JAMROCK. Originally released in 1996 and featuring songwriting and production by older brother Stephen Marley, MR. MARLEY deals head-on with the issue of Damian's legendary father and his influence, both in featuring a baby photo of Damian with his dad on the front cover and by adapting some of Bob Marley's rhythms for his own songs. This is not a pure reggae release, however; rather, it's the first of Damian Marley's trademark blends of hip-hop attitude and reggae soul that would make him an international star nearly a decade later. Highlights include the slinky "Keep On Grooving" and the album's closing paternal tribute, "Mr. Marley."

Mr. Marley
$8.85 The Melody Makers' breakout album, and why is clear from the opening notes of the title track which kicks off the set. Producers Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, of Talking Heads fame, gloss the record with a perfect electro-sheen, helping shine the pop edges to a sharp gleam, while still emphasizing the dance beats. The Melody Makers add the magic; veterans now after two previous albums, they've honed their sound to a fine edge. They still mix styles -- party music, cultural songs, and rootsy numbers -- but the production with its keyboard heavy emphasis and digitized beats makes the stylistic shifts less startling than ...

Mr. Marley
$11.99 Davey Pluck (organ); Christopher Meredith, Robbie Shakespeare (bass);
Harry "T" (percussion); Sly Dunbar (programming); DJ Khaled (vinyl sratches).
HALFWAY TREE won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album.
In Kingston, Jamaica, the neighborhood of Halfway Tree is seen as a meeting place, a junction between the rich and poor parts of town. Damian Marley, the youngest son of reggae icon Bob Marley, wants his music to do the same thing, to be a bridge between the rich and the poor, the new and the old. For the most part, he succeeds as his North American debut offers enough social consciousness to keep his father's fans happy while still dabbling in newer forms of dancehall and hip-hop. North Americans may be familiar with Marley's work from his cameo appearance on Eve's album Scorpion. On Halfway Tree, Eve returns the favor as she appears on "Where Is the Love?," one of the funkiest tracks on the album. Another highlight is "Stand a Chance," which features some funky harmonica as well as the rhymes of Treach of Naughty By Nature as well as the sweet vocals of dancehall legend Yami Bolo. Tracks like "More Justice" and "Give Dem Some Way" feature the kind of social commentary you'd expect ...
| | Nas God's Son CD (2002)
Mr. Marley
$7.59 In the tradition of its predecessor STILLMATIC, GOD'S SON seeks to erase the memory of Nas's commercial pop-crossover albums, instead hearkening back to the poetic glory days of STILLMATIC. The New York hip-hop legend returns to the thoughtful, introspective philosophy that turned heads early in his recording career. There ...
| | Damian Marley Welcome To Jamrock CD (2005)
Mr. Marley
$11.99 Tinged with overtones of dancehall ("Khaki Suit") and urban contemporary R&B (the silky smooth "Beautiful," which features a cameo from Bobby Brown), WELCOME TO JAMROCK is a melting pot of an album, one as well suited to the streets of Brooklyn as the neighborhoods of Kingston. The cover image--which depicts Marley in militaristic garb surrounded by corrugated metal fences--indicates that Marley means business, a fact confirmed by ...
