| | Yale Strom Borsht With Bread, Brothers/Klezmer CD Yale Strom Discography of CDs
Bandleader and fiddler Yale Strom has tirelessly researched the klezmer music of Eastern Europe and the result is a grasp of the music that goes beyond technique. On this 2007 release, he leads Hot Pstromi through a lively, witty, at times sultry set, featuring the smoky vocals of Elizabeth Schwartz. On numbers like "Cafe Jew Zoo" the band shows both serious chops and a rich sense of humor.

Borsht With Bread, Brothers/Klezmer music CDs
$20.25 A collection of world vocal music backed by sparse yet highly effective vernacular guitars, flute and percussion. Material ranges from a peppy Karelian tune ("Oi Dai") from the portfolio of Finnish girl-group Varttina to a cappella songs of the Balkans and Middle East, where Libana really hit their stride. Standouts include the "Medley of Slav Wedding Songs" and a gorgeous vocal arrangement with hammer dulcimer of the traditional Rumanian cradle song "Joc de Leagne." While a minimalizing of dissonance means you won't mistake Libana's adaptations for the genuine article, neither is the listener persuaded that these women are ethnic vacationers. ~ Bob Tarte
Libana, New England's international touring world music ensemble, formed in 1979 by Artistic Director, Susan Robbins, has been researching, performing, and celebrating songs, dances and instrumental music from around the world, especially as handed down through women's traditions. In ...

| | Tysondog Beware Of The Dog CD (1984)
Borsht With Bread, Brothers/Klezmer music CDs
$13.59 Reissue of the NWOBHM band's debut album that was highly influenced by Judas Priest. 9 tracks
Arguably the last band of note to emerge from Neat Records' once rich coffers of Northern English metal talent (by then already in severe decline), Wallsend-based quintet Tysondog caught the very tail end of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal with the fine 1984 debut Beware of the Dog. Unlike many of Neat's one-dimensional proto-thrashers, Tysondog was a prototypical, all-purpose heavy metal group showing more studio finesse than many of its peers -- something that may come as a surprise considering this album was produced by none other than Venom bassist/vocalist Cronos. To this end, singer Clutch Carruthers was one of the group's better assets, his powerful but clear voice lending album standouts like "Hammerhead" (an ...
