The curious title of Carla Bley's 2007 release THE LOST CHORDS FIND PAOLO FRESU is meant quite literally, since Bley's quartet the Lost Chords recruited Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu for the sessions. Fresu's clear, lyrical tone perfectly complements Bley's gorgeous compositions and the playing of saxophonist Andy Sheppard, drummer Billy Drummond, and bassist Steve Swallow. The wittiness of titling six tunes after bananas ("One Banana," "Two Banana," etc.) belies the depth, complexity, and pure lyrical beauty of the music.
Personnel: Carla Bley (piano); Andy Sheppard (soprano, tenor saxophone); Paolo Fresu (trumpet, flugelhorn); Steve Swallow (bass guitar); Billy Drummond (drums).
CMJ (p.8) - "[T]he fact that, at 71, Bley continues to innovate while still sounding timeless is this record's greatest accomplishment." Down Beat (p.59) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[W]ith some of the dispassionate slyness, but also with the weird personality, circus-like elements, in-joke quotes and adoration of a good, simple, unexpected harmony." JazzTimes (p.134) - "The fact that Fresu fits seamlessly into Bley's band the Lost Chords proves that he is an unusually brainy sensualist. And the purity and warmth and soulfulness of his sound make Bley's lyricism less ambiguous." | | Jay Rowe Jay Walking CD (1997)
Lost Chords Find Paolo Fresu music CDs
$20.25 Positive Music has become an indie haven for lesser known musicians who, with the right exposure, could be every bit as renowned as their major label counterparts. Keyboardist Jay Rowe is a perfect example. His Jay Walking is one of those technically flawless smooth jazz releases, with ultra melodic cool funk dashed with enough improvisation to qualify as real jazz-much like Bob Mamet, who gets the glory Atlantic Records creates for him. Just as Mamet hits his peaks interacting with Eric Marienthal, on tunes like "Taylor's Song," Rowe delights in the dual power of his lively piano and David Mann's soaring soprano, which tackles ...

Lost Chords Find Paolo Fresu music CDs
$16.45 A well-known and highly acclaimed performer on the local entertainment scene in her beloved hometown of Las Vegas, Sandy Kastel has spent an exhilarating lifetime singing, both literally and figuratively, the praises of the city and its incredible legacy of music. Now, with the upcoming release of her debut album on Silk & Satin Records, the former Miss Nevada—whose father, acclaimed saxophonist, joined Harry James’ band there when she was a little girl—becomes a true cultural ambassador for the city, bringing this magic to the rest of the world for the very first time. Kastel is currently putting the finishing touches on her eagerly anticipated recording, a tribute to the glorious entertainers who have defined the Vegas legend over the years. Putting her own unique spins on songs that continue to transfix our imaginations decades after we first heard them, the singer pays homage to, among others, Frank Sinatra (a medley of “All Of Me,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” and “Just One Of Those Things,” plus “Luck Be A Lady”), Wayne Newton (“Danke Schoen”), Peggy Lee (“Fever,” “Come Back To Me”), Johnny Mathis (“Misty”), Dinah Washington/Celine Dion (“When I Fall In Love”) and Judy Garland (“Over The Rainbow”).Kastel has been signed to the independent Las Vegas based label Silk & Satin Records, which will initially sell the album via a TV direct response and radio campaign and via her own website.Gearing up for the collection’s late spring release, the singer will titillate AC radio listeners across the country starting in early March with her powerful cover of “Beyond The Sea.” Though world renowned as a classic hit by frequent Vegas performer Bobby Darin, the song, penned by Jack Lawrence & Charles Trenet, actually had big band origins, appearing in the late 40s on recordings by big band legends Benny Goodman and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. While Kastel’s recording pays homage to Darin, she’s also forging a beautiful, even more personal connection to her dad.Kastel, whose father, Dick Kastel, worked with everyone from Henry Mancini and Michel Legrand to Sinatra, Liza Minelli, Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme, Shirley MacLaine, Juliet Prowse and Ann Margret, has been part of the Vegas entertainment scene since her earliest high school days, when she performed in shows like “Sweet Charity” and “Funny Girl.” Over the years, she has performed at many of the major hotels (Sahara, Hilton, MGM ...
