Seven years since his last solo offering, former Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach makes a serious return to hard rock with ANGEL DOWN. Between reality television and live musical theater, Bach has kept his profile fairly high (even if he didn't rely on his pop-metal vocal prowess). ANGEL DOWN features the writing/producing talents of Roy Z, best known for his work with Bruce Dickinson and Rob Halford. Filling out Bach's studio band is a veritable metal supergroup featuring former members of Halford and Testament, as well as guest vocals by Axl Rose on three songs . Sebastian Bach fans will likely find ANGEL DOWN to be heavier and darker than his past works, but a solid effort nonetheless.
Amp - Amended ProducRolling Stone (p.82) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Bach scrapes away the hair-rock gloss of his old band for brittle speed-metal distortion and a raw, bleating vocal style with a lot of Rob Halford." Entertainment Weekly (p.71) - "'American Metalhead' throbs nastily....Axl Rose even lends vocals to three cuts and does Bach proud on an appealingly sleazy duet of Aerosmith's 'Back in the Saddle.'" -- Grade: B Kerrang (Magazine) (p.47) - "[T]here are some startling songs here....[The] strutting cover of Aerosmith's 'Back In The Saddle' is reason enough to shell out for this mostly cracking return." | | Axel Rudi Pell Mystica CD (2006)
Angel Down music CDs
$14.65 Yet another album by German guitar superstar Axel Rudi Pell, Mystica delivers...well, pretty much what every previous Axel Rudi Pell album has delivered. Pell is comfortable enough with his impressive chops that he doesn't have to do the whole God of the Fretboard routine that so many European metal guitarists are saddled with, so his albums are refreshingly light on the pyrotechnics. He does have a fondness for the pretentiously titled instrumental, however, so here listeners have "Haunted Castle Serenade (Opus #4 Grazioso e Aggresso)" and "The Mysterious Return (Intro)." Otherwise, this is utterly straightforward, by the book melodic hard rock in the '80s poodle-hair style, complete with former Hardline singer Johnny Gioeli's pleasant but utterly anonymous vocals. If you still treasure your Scorpions and Rainbow albums, Mystica is sure to please, but those whose taste in metal has progressed beyond 1987 might find this unapologetically old-school stuff too retro for their tastes. ~ Stewart Mason
Axel has been a firm fixture in the German Melodic Hard scene. In the musical microcosm Axel Rudi Pell has always had everything in its traditional place, on the other hand he moves it continuously. If one had supposed that after the early 90's albums "Eternal Prisoner" and "Between ...

$17.45 The British bad-boy band Busted offers up catchy punk-pop tunes on this first outing, which includes "Britney," "Psycho Girl," and "Dawson's Geek."
Busted's US debut grabs the strongest tracks from the youthful British trio's two albums, their 2002 debut (also called Busted) and its rapid-fire follow-up Present for Everyone, both of which were smash hits in their home country. Sort of a rock reinvention of the boy band concept, Busted's James Bourne, Mattie Jay, and Charlie Simpson match slick melodies to blaring guitars and lyrics about being young, hooking up, and having crushes on stewardesses and schoolteachers. In addition to the singles "What I Go to School For", "Air Hostess", "Year 3000", and "Crashed the Wedding", Busted includes the boys' symphonic pop version of the Thunderbirds theme (written for the 2004 live-action film adaptation) and a run through the Undertones classic "Teenage Kicks". The latter track's a little too processed, but some raucous lead guitar and strong verses from each Busted principal help make it a fun romp. ~ Johnny Loftus
Busted's eponymous debut made a pretty big splash in the trio's native U.K., where its next-generation sound found immediate favor with kids stuck in a growth spurt between Boyzone and blink-182 allegiances. Principals Mattie Jay, James Bourne, and Charlie Simpson slide smoothly between material like "Psycho Girl" and "Losing You" -- dull teen pop ballads with the sickeningly overwrought vocals typical of the genre -- and relatively more creative stuff that punches up the formula with pop-ternative production and smirking, yet still squeaky clean lyrical witticisms. At best (lead single "What I Go to School For"; the mindless future frolic of "Year 3000") it's BBMak with better cheekbones; at worst, Busted is a neutered Sum 41. Sure, "Crash and Burn" is stippled with muted electric guitar riffs and an amplified, almost-the-real-thing drum machine. But its spurned suitor sob story ("I asked you to dance at the disco/BUT YOU SAID NO!") is right out of the pop star handbook. At least those guys in Sum 41 rhymed "El Nińo" with "drinking in the back of an El Camino". This is the biggest problem with Busted. While they sing about undressing foxy schoolteachers, and insult rivals for trying to look like James Van Der Beek, the outrageousness seems disingenuous given how much of their debut sounds like Westlife warmed over. [The album was re-released in 2004 featuring several different tracks.] ~ Johnny Loftus
Man, by this point, Cheap Trick couldn't even sell out correctly! 1988's Lap of Luxury had spawned a couple of hit singles, and a modicum of craft and shameless pandering could have kept the gravy train rolling at least a little while longer. Instead, the group hit the concert trail for an extended period of time and then ran back into the studio before they had written any halfway decent material, and unfortunately, Busted sounds like what it is: a rushed, half-baked follow-up to a surprise hit that does the band no favors. Even the obligatory Diane Warren-penned power ballad, "Wherever Would I Be," is completely horrid, and that's by the low standards of Diane Warren-penned power ballads! (To his credit, Robin Zander sounds like he's cringing throughout the entire song.) The band does manage to rouse themselves a little at the very end, for a credible run-through of their hero Roy Wood's "Rock and Roll ...
