El Cid - Limited Collector's Edition Reviews: "...It is not only a spectacle the likes of which we may never see again, but also brings an elegance to the form not much seen before its release, either..."
-- Lloyd Sachs, Chicago Sun-Times "[A] feast of visual detail....The film overflows with deep-focus vistas, towering sets, densely crowded battle sequences and the imposing presence of two remarkable physical specimens, Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren."-- Dave Kehr, New York Times "[I]t's clear that the director relished working in 70mm and having such rich resources at his disposal. As a spectacle, it's muscular and more dynamic than most."-- Tom Charity, Sight and Sound 5 stars out of 5 -- "There are obvious resonances with today's religious tensions, but this is a story of much more, and it is handled superbly."-- Jan Vincent-Rudzki, Ultimate DVD El Cid - Limited Collector's Edition | List Price | $35.98 (You save $5.39) | | Studio | Weinstein Company / Genius | | Orig Year | 1961 | | All Time Sales Rank | 12096 | | CD Universe Part number | 7534084 | | Discs | 2 | | Release Date | Jan 29, 2008 | | Rating | Not Rated | | Running Time | 188 Minutes | | Additional Info | 2-Disc Collector's Edition | | Movie Details | Color; Collector's Edition; 2-Disc Collector's Edition; Limited Collector's Edition; 2-Disc Set |
El Cid - Limited Collector's Edition Video El Cid - Limited Collector's Edition Movie Review Superb El Cid remains my favorite epic movie. There is just something about knights and medieval combat that adds interest and excitement to a movie. Incidentally, the duel between El Cid (Heston) and Don Martin is one of the best ever filmed, in my opinion.
In any epic movie, the action is presented in comparatively short bursts, while the dramatic and romantic portions of the movie seem lengthy and tend to drag a bit. El Cid is no exception in that regard. Fortunately, religious references are used only within the context of the antagonism that exists between the Christian Spaniards and the Muslim Spaniards, which is the basis of the plot. Also, subtle religious overtones are used to suggest that God has a plan to end the conflict in Spain and may be working through El Cid. El Cid, per se, is portrayed as the purest and noblest of knights and the viewer is left to conclude that such a warrior would, of course, be the logical divine instrument to bring civil conflict to an end. Therefore, in contrast to many epic biblical movies, the plot and historical dimensions of El Cid do not become weighed down and distorted by religious melodrama. The conclusion of the movie and demise of El Cid has always seemed a bit too abrupt to me, but this does not detract significantly from the overall quality of this movie. The music is nothing short of splendid.

El Cid - Limited Collector's Edition DVD Anthony Mann masterfully directs this classic tale of the 11th-century hero (Heston) who fought to unite Spain. Known as history's "compassionate warrior," the film follows El Cid's remarkable journey from peace-broker accused of treason to the King's fighting champion, and later from exiled hero to legendary martyr.

El Cid - Limited Collector's Edition review
$29.35 The success of Anthony Mann's wide-screen epic El Cid (1961) led to this even grander undertaking, one of Hollywood's periodic infatuations with the decadence of Imperial Rome. After murdering his father, Emperor Marcus Aurelius Commodus drifts into a life of wanton depravity as the Gothic hordes gather at the Empire's borders. THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE is a Hollywood spectacular in the grand tradition, but Mann manages to elicit some terrific performances amongst the mob scenes. According to the trailer, the film contains "Not just 3 or 4, but ALL of the known emotions!"
