Belo Horizonte album
$15.05 Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink ...

Herb Alpert was still using an array of SoCal studio all-stars as his Tijuana Brass when South of the Border (1964) began to restore the combo's good name after the modest Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass, Vol. 2 (1963) failed to ignite a fire in listener's ...

Belo Horizonte music CDs
$15.95 ~ Eli's music treads uncharted waters....he has the potential to be a formidable force in the evolution of Jazz! - Herbie Hancock ~ Kevin is all-encompassing, phenomenally so! - John Scofield Liner Notes (by Doug Weiss) : One of the things that has always fascinates me is the way Art perseveres even against long odds. Beethoven wrote his later works while being almost totally deaf. Olivier Messiaen wrote and performed his 'Quartet for the End of Time' while in a concentration camp during the German occupation of France in World War two. And there are many other less extreme examples, such as Miles Davis sketching the ideas for his classic recording 'Kind of Blue' in a taxicab. When inspiration strikes, certain kinds of people pay close attention. They drop what they are doing, block out all distraction and try to unravel the mystery that is presenting itself. These people are called Artists. Eli Degibri and Kevin Hays, while on tour together with the Al Foster Quartet, started to feel this inspiration. After 21 nights of playing together, we all knew that we had that elusive yet fundamental quality of all great jazz music, 'chemistry'. This means each band member fully supporting the Leaders' musical vision, without judgment or pre-conceived notions of what the Music was supposed to be. Eli and Kevin began cooking up ideas for this duo project in the back of the 1988 Fiat Ducato Maxi Hymermobil that served as our tour bus. Some phrases of singing, often followed by laughter or earnest discussion, were heard from those riding up front. At sound checks, after we had our thing together, they might try a little tune or work out a phrase. Both seemed to always have their minds turning for an idea. At the end ...

| | Kim Fast Missing The Mistletoe CD (2007)
Belo Horizonte album
$20.29 Brand New Review!Consistent with my firm belief that Canada produces some of the truly great holiday albums, here comes the amazing Kim Fast, who is Missing the Mistletoe in Alberta. This saucy singer-songwriter effortlessly delivers jazzy pop in an acoustic setting. The diverse Christmas numbers seamlessly mix contemporary and ancient carols, and include two Fast originals. For me, the success of offerings like this rises and falls on the strength of the lead voice, and Fast is first-rate. Her vocals are flirty and flexible, and her supporting trio provides an excellent foundation with arrangements that suit her style to a "T." The album opens brilliantly with seductive percussion on the Jingle Bells/Deck the Halls medley. The creative title track Missing the Mistletoe will have you longing for the festive yuletide kissing you've been waiting for all year; this original tune is a kicky treat. Fast's lovely I'll Be Home for Christmas is intense melancholy wrapped in Streisand-esque pop. In contrast, the more serious a cappella strains of O Come O Come Emmanuel has a more classical sentiment with gorgeous multi-layered harmonies that will transport you to a far better place. Everything is very, very good here. Kim Fast has spunk and style, and her delightful Missing the Mistletoe most definitely deserves a listen--it's great!--Carol Swanson christmasreviews (Reviewed in 2007)Introduced to choral music and harmony by her family at a very young age, she met her first love, jazz, in high school in Winnipeg, Canada. Having been trained classically, she was exposed to Manhattan Transfer, Take6 and The New York Voices and developed a love for rich, complex harmonies and vocalese. Kim performed in Winnipeg's 'Prodigy' for three years and competed with them at the Brandon Jazz Festival. When she was just 17, Kim moved to Edmonton, which became home base for a yearlong tour with band 'Morning Star'. Kim graduated from Grant MacEwan College's Music Program, which she credits for helping her discover the unique instrument that is her voice. Kim was a member of the Grant MacEwan Showcase Bands and later, part of a vocal ensemble under the direction of Scott Leithead.Kim is a well-known singer and musician in the Edmonton church music culture and a clinician at 'Breakforth Canada', the nation's largest worship conference. She has done background vocals for many of the international artists imported for this world-class annual event. Kim's current project is her first solo recording. It is apropos that she is kicking ...
| | Andres, Brian & The Afro-Cuban Jazz Cartel Drummers Speak CD (2007)
Belo Horizonte CD music
$16.39 Like many other drummers I found myself beating out rhythms on any stationary object from an early age. The impetus to create sound, to find rhythm urged me to fill space and silence. I found the perfect voice for myself when I first sat behind a drum set. I believe it is the drum that chooses us, not vice versa. My lifelong dedication to rhythm and sound has nurtured a passion for Afro-Cuban music. The San Francisco Bay Area has historically been a hotbed for Latin Drummers. Players such as Armando Peraza, Francisco Aguabella, Benny Velarde and Orestes Vilato paved the way ...
