| | Goldfinger CD (1964) Remastered
Unsu music CDs
$8.85 Shirley Bassey's "Goldfinger" wasn't the biggest hit from the James Bond movies, but it remains the archetype. With Bassey's bold, blaring delivery of Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley's over-the-top lyrics, her voice as brassy as the unforgettable horn fills that punctuate the verses, "Goldfinger Into Miami (Main Title)" (as the song is more prosaically identified here) is a true swinging-'60s pop treasure. Though the rest of the album isn't John Barry's all-time best James Bond score--that would be 1965's thrilling THUNDERBALL--it's certainly top-drawer work. Tracks like "Oddjob's Pressing Engagement" and the subtle "Gassing the Gangsters" rework the main theme in imaginative ways, and the climactic "Dawn Raid On Fort Knox" is effectively tense even without the visuals. The brief "Teasing the Korean" is a similarly impressive exercise in atmospherics, proving anew that John Barry was one of the most gifted soundtrack composers of the '60s.
One of John Barry's best efforts, with a particularly striking title song belted out by Shirley Bassey between blasting brass fills, Goldfinger was also the first James Bond soundtrack to hit the number one spot on the U.S. charts (ironically, displacing another United Artists soundtrack, A Hard Day's Night), even as Bassey's performance hit number eight as a single. While Barry effectively expanded his collection of Bond themes with Thunderball (underwater themes) and You Only Live Twice (space themes), Goldfinger was a prime opportunity to lock in some of the action themes that would recur over the next 35 years. Of particular note is the track compiling Barry's cues for the robbery of Fort Knox ("Dawn Raid on Fort Knox"), which provides a slow build so wonderfully agonizing that the remainder of the album, including "The Arrival of the Bomb and Count Down," with its pounding drums and roaring brass, ...
| | Abigail Washburn Song Of The Traveling Daughter CD (2005)
Unsu songs
$9.99 Abigail Washburn was busy during the first half of 2005, laying down tracks for her first solo album on Nettwerk and serving as a member of Uncle Earl on Rounder. Song of the Traveling Daughter is an apt title for the type of folk music Washburn makes: acoustic, easygoing, and tuneful. Songs like "Sometimes" and "Rockabye Dixie" give the impression of being traditional, and Washburn's simple, old-style banjo accompaniment deepens this impression. However, these and the other songs on Traveling Daughter are ...
| | DC Sills Always A Tourist CD (2005)
Unsu album
$10.15 Raised in the piney woods of Central Louisiana, DC Sills taught herself to play the guitar by watching Austin City Limits. Through time, practice, and hours of recorded ACL shows, she became good enough to play rhythm guitar in a bluegrass band in high school. Influenced by the local bluegrass and gospel music scene and through the tutelage of writers like Nanci Griffith and John Prine (via Austin City Limits), DC's songwriting career was born. Because of these influences, it is often hard to categorize DC's music. Is it country, folk, gospel or bluegrass? That is for the listener to decide. As a songwriter and performer DC feels both experienced and naive. She sums it up this way, "Sometimes it is a very scary thing, songwriting, telling people's stories, often turning fact into fiction, to protect the innocent and not so innocent. I don't know why I was chosen to have these words and melodies appear in my head but I am thankful and grateful." In the early 90's, DC helped to create the "Trauma Momma's", a local 'party band'. It was this experience that gave her the performing bug and strengthened her songwriting skills. "Singing & playing songs you've written, hitting that groove where you just know the audience is as into it as you are...you just can't beat that feeling". Now a few years later, ...
| | Balance Of Power Heathen Machine CD (2006)
Unsu CD music
$12.59 Balance Of Power was started in 1995 with a handful of well-known London area rockers. Their first album, "When the World Falls Down," was released the following year by Pony Canyon for Japan. After the success of their first album, Pony Canyon became quite eager for the band to create a follow-up, but began putting pressure on them regarding Tony Ritchie's vocal style. They wanted the band to have a more dynamic singer with a greater range. After the first audition with Lance King, there was no decision to be made, he was the ideal candidate and he was in. Tony continued to fulfill the role of songwriter. About this time, guitarist Paul Curtis was becoming fed up with life in London, and decided it was time for him to retire from music completely. Tony Ritchie and Lionel Hicks had both previously worked with a guitarist by the name of Pete Southern. They knew Pete would be the perfect fit for Balance of Power and brought him in to take Paul's place. For Balance of Power's second release, "Book of Secrets," inspiration was taken from "The Bible Code", a book by Michael Drosnin. The album was released in 1998 and received rave reviews from all over Europe and Japan. The songs "Seven Days into Nevermore" and "Miracles and Dreams" were in heavy rotation on all of the syndicated metal shows in Europe and Asia. Following up on the success of "Book of Secrets," Balance Of Power returned to the studio and found inspiration for their next album, "Ten More Tales of Grand Illusion," released in 1999. Balance of Power began their first ever tour to back "Ten More Tales" later that year. They played 19 shows in 21 days, finally able to put to rest rumors that they were just a studio band. The tour was deemed the most successful metal tour in Germany over the past 2-3 years, with sold out venues across the country. Writing began immediately on their fourth album titled "Perfect Balance." "Perfect Balance" was released to rave reviews in 2001 with it's mix of incredible vocals and progressive guitar work. Balance Of Power played their first US tour date in November at Prog Power 2 in Atlanta, alongside Ark, Evergrey, Kamelot, and Symphony X. In 2002 they also played for the first time at the Bloodstock festival in England. Shortly after the show, it was decided it would be in everyone's best interest for them to ...
