50 Plus Belles Chansons album
$15.15 Celtic Woman, initially a one-shot collaboration by six leading Irish vocalists for a 2004 PBS special, struck a chord of adoration for the Emerald Isle, a fancy affecting both sides of the Atlantic, and swiftly became a permanent collective. THE GREATEST JOURNEY captures many of the best moments of elegant harmonizing by the act, from their serene and rapturous take on ...

| | Clannad 2 CD (1974)
50 Plus Belles Chansons album
$15.39 Although best known in the US for their later music, which combined Celtic roots with new age and pop influences, the Irish sibling group Clannad started as a traditional Irish folk group. Indeed, all but three tracks on the group's second album, from 1974, are in Gaelic. The acoustic instrumentation, heavy on the harp and pennywhistle, is lovely but unobtrusive, so that all the focus ...

50 Plus Belles Chansons CD music
$15.65 As a survey of the first quarter century or so of Clannad's recording career, this double-CD compilation is intelligently selected and annotated. It draws pretty evenly from the various phases of the group's lifespan, from their most traditional folk-based albums in 1973 and 1974 to the slicker rock, pop, and new age-influenced sounds that gave them some crossover pop success in Europe and America in the 1980s and 1990s. Their most well-known tracks, and cuts with celebrity cameos, ...

| | Billy Childish Christmas 1979 CD (2007)
50 Plus Belles Chansons songs
$14.05 Given Billy Childish's profligate recording habits, it's a bit surprising that it took him until 2007 to get around to making a holiday album, though the fact that sentimentality and the milk of human kindness don't loom large in his world-view might have accounted for the delay. At any rate, Childish and his new combo the Musicians of the British Empire -- Nurse Julie on bass and Wolf Howard on drums -- attack a program of seasonal selections both old and new on Christmas 1979, which may be the most gloriously grimy Christmas album of recent memory. Childish and his Musicians detour a few garage-friendly classics into yuletide melodies, as "Comanche" becomes "Link Wray's Christmas," the Who's "A Quick One While He's Away" gets a holiday rewrite, and the Sonics' "Have Love Will Travel" mutates into "Santa Claus." Elsewhere, Childish refuses to let the holiday season spoil his often sour mood, as commercialism is attacked on "Knick Knack Paddywhack (Chuck It in the Bin)," seasonal poverty takes center stage in "A Poundland Christmas," and the title tunes finds ...
