| | Justin Bieber My World CD (2009) Enhanced CD
Bricks Are Heavy
$7.96 Within a couple years, Canadian teenager Justin Bieber went from covering Usher on YouTube to working with Usher. An internet sensation from his renditions of several pop and pop-oriented R&B hits, he was still only 15 years old when he released this, his first album -- though it's more like an EP since it is contains only seven songs that are 25 minutes in duration. Given the comfort level he showed in the material he covered, My World plays it straight, based on the kind of age-appropriate content that would fill out a release from a younger Chris ...
| | Rick Derringer Sky Is Falling CD (2009)
Bricks Are Heavy
$8.80 Released on Fuel 2000, The Sky Is Falling is actually a reissue of the Doin' Business As... Derringer, Bogert & Appice album that was first released in Europe in 2001. In this short-lived power trio, guitarist and producer Rick Derringer reportedly "replaced" Jeff Beck in the "follow-up" to 1973's Beck, Bogert & Appice album (their rhythm section is, of course, made up of ex-Vanilla Fudge members bassist Tim Bogert and rock & roll über-drummer Carmine Appice. Nah. While this doesn't reach those lofty heights. Strictly out of its time and element -- from the songs to the production -- as a hard rock album with well-written compositions, excellent vocals, and musicianship, it works very well. Hearing the set in 2001 was just plain weird given what else was going on in popular music at the time. Hearing it in 2009 with its new title feels almost right, since rock music is deliberately trying to return to the 1970s. These cats are all strict super-choppers ...
| | Jill Jack Love Hotel CD (2001)
Bricks Are Heavy
$18.99 Singer/songwriter Jill Jack has long been lauded and adored in metro Detroit, and this well-produced, full-sounding album compares to her folk-rock colleagues in the big leagues. Her folk-pop, waxing upbeat and cheerful on one track and then confessional and revealing on a sad ballad, contains elements of rock and a soulful R&B. ~ Tom Schulte
Her name is Jill Jack. Yes, it's her real name. This singer/songwriter from Michigan is as real as anyone can be. With a voice that can go from plaintive country croon to husky rock'n'roll growl, emotionally honest songs and her own brand of friendly sexiness, Jill takes the best of American music and stirs it into a very special melting pot.It is Jill's connection to the everyday that suffuses her writing and keeps the lifeline to her audience strong and vital. "The fans I draw are the average American," Jill observes. "They're all ages, from all walks of life and backgrounds." She tells, with equal parts wry affection and humorous awe, of going into a rock club for a benefit and doing an acoustic story-ballad ("Rosie") - and then having a teary cross-dressing punk rocker come up to her and tell her how much he loved that song. So, okay; maybe they're not all average Americans...She is an artist in the tradition of songwriters such as Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, Woody Guthrie - not so much in style as in sensibility, in the ability to tap into the archetypical American subconscious and craft songs that speak to us all. "I'm still learning who I am, as a writer and performer. Each ...

$23.75 | | John Krane Doris Buzz & Friends CD (2008)
Bricks Are Heavy
$13.65 The essence of good songwriting is good story telling, which is where John Krane\'s \"Doris, Buzz and Friends\" excels. The tracks on this short but packed album spin with well-described tales of brilliant dolphins (the title track), a real proposed alternative to the nuclear bomb (\"The Story of the Japanese Bat Bomb\"), a girl sadly listening to bad music in a coffeeshop (\"A: John Mayer\"), or a child\'s call to her lost dog (\"Shadow & Clementine\").Whatever the subject, the lyrics are rich, fascinating, and at times, corny, funny, or very disquieting--even occasionally morbid, an early Randy Newman type of drunken longing.That\'s not to say that this is a depressing album. Far from it, in fact, as some of the tracks bounce with Beach Boys or Beatlesque melodies and odd eccentricities like overdriven synths, belches, sound effects, and harmonies. When it goes deep, it knows how to get there, but Krane is content to stay on the surface much of the time, toying with sound and lyrics to see who\'s really paying attention. The ...
