As far as it goes, this 12-cut Fats Domino compilation -- issued as part of Capitol's largely unimpressive Platinum series in 2007 -- is solid. The biggest hits are here: "Blueberry Hill," "Ain't That a Shame?," "I'm Walkin'," "Walking to New Orleans," and "I'm Ready." That said, 12 cuts are simply not enough Fats Domino, especially when the disc -- despite its budget price tag -- is less than half an hour long. Those looking for something a little bit more substantial would be well advised to seek out the 30-cut Greatest Hits: Walking to New Orleans, also released in 2007. There are real liner notes, and virtually all the major cuts are included along with truly wonderful surprises for those less knowledgeable about the man and his music, but who are curious. Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies.
