The CD-Extra version of THE SOUTHERN HARMONY AND MUSICAL COMPANION contains all the tracks from the original album along with two bonus tracks. The screensavers, a link to the Black Crowes' website and full-length videos of "Remedy" and "Sometimes Salvation" are accessible using a CD-ROM drive. The audio portion will play on any standard audio CD player. This CD is also available as part of the 5-CD SHO' NUFF box set.
Given the sub-Stones boogie of their debut, SHAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER, THE SOUTHERN HARMONY AND MUSICAL COMPANION came as a quietly accomplished body of work, apparently way beyond their relative youth and experience. The EXILE ON MAIN STREET references were still intact, but the predominant swagger and sashay had been abandoned in favour of a soulful interpretation of their roots, rather than a parody of their influences. Chris Robinson's Jagger pastiche was replaced by a more gutsy, honest strut, while brother Rich plays with an aplomb and spirit that struck darkly at the heart of their songs. A very grown-up record indeed.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.

Singer Suzanne Pittson, who is based in the San Francisco Bay area, has a wide range, is able to interpret lyrics with proper sensitivity and is a masterful scatter. She improvises constantly, and her solos are full of surprises and chance-taking. In addition to a few fresh versions of standards (including "My Ship," "Out Of Nowhere" and an eccentric "Love For Sale"), Pittson explores such rarely heard material as Oliver Nelson's "Butch And Butch" and "Blues And The Abstract Truth" (both of which have been given lyrics by her husband, pianist Jeff Pittson), Jerome Kern's underrated (and rather emotional) "In Love In Vain," and Jimmy Heath's complex "Gingerbread Boy." Suzanne Pittson lives in New York and is Assistant Professor of Jazz Vocal Studies at The City College of New York, located in Harlem on 138th & Convent. Called a "true jazz singer" by Cadence magazine and a "true musician" by JazzTimes, she is rapidly gaining the respect of the jazz world because of her scatting and technical accuracy, her creativity and musicianship, and her broad improvisational vocabulary. Suzanne’s approach to scat singing reveals a deep awareness of the origin and development of the jazz instrumentalist.
