Juan Luis Guerra La Llave de Mi Corazon CD (2007)
Contraste songs Juan Luis Guerra gained considerable artistic and commercial stature throughout the 1980s, '90s, and 2000s. Guerra and his band 440 have experimented restlessly over the years, blending musical styles from their native Dominican Republic, such as bachata and merengue, with African-influenced sounds, jazz, R&B, salsa, folk, rock, and commercial pop. LA LAVE DE MI CORAZON (2007) is one of Guerra's strongest efforts, bringing together his adventurous leanings with catchy, accessible songs and excellent, lockstep musicianship. Incessantly upbeat, the album is a joy to listen to, a fact assisted by its beautifully crisp production.
Personnel: Juan Luis Guerra (background vocals); Luisa Payan (steel guitar); Prodigio (accordion); Luis DelRosario (alto saxophone); Sandy Gabriel (tenor saxophone); Ed Calle (baritone saxophone); Rodheb Santos (trumpet); Jose Fléte (trombone); Jeremías King, Abednego DeLos Santos (bass instrument); Ramses Colón (acoustic bass); Ezequiel Francisco (drums); Juan "Chocolate" DeLaCruz (bongos); Rafael "Rafo" German (guiro); Isidro Bobadilla (percussion); Christopher Glansdorp (unknown instrument); Roger Zayas, ...

Andy Montanez Salsa con Reggaeton CD (2006)
Contraste buy CD music This longtime salsa favorite -- with the help of a little reinvention -- tops the charts once again with his 2006 record, Salsa con Reggaetón. In an effort to synthesize the old and the new, the classic and the fresh, the Univision label employed the talents of top Latin music producers Ramon B. Sanchez and Sergio George, both of whom need only touch a project for it to turn to gold. Montañez, a veteran of the world famous El Gran Combo, a crown in the Puerto Rican salsa crown, collaborated with some of the island's new breed of recording stars. Reggaeton artists like Daddy Yankee, Cheka, and Voltio are just a few who lend their flow to Montañez's new sound, which he calls "salsatón." The tunes are fun and danceable, a great mixture of thick, live sounds and the block-rockin' sound of the drum machines that give reggaeton its steely spine. Though bringing together a well-seasoned, gray-haired salsa vocalist with raw, contemporary talent may seem like a gamble, it seems to have paid off. Salsa con Reggaetón rose to the Top Five of more than one of Billboard's Latin Music charts. Andy Montañez sounds as strong and artful as he ever did. This is one for the books. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez

Victor Manuelle Decision Unamine CD (2006)
Contraste CD music Puerto Rican salsa singer Victor Manuelle returns with DECISION UNANIME. The album stays true to the roots of salsa even as it incorporates pop-oriented elements like the synthesizer fanfare that opens "El Perdedor" and the electronic beats that occasionally supplant the conga-led percussion grooves. Aside from that mild production gloss, most of DECISION UNANIME is as exciting and dramatic as the best salsa, especially on live tracks like the celebratory "Puerto Rico 2006." Even the ballads, such as "Nuestro Amor Se Ha Vuelto Ayer," are irresistibly danceable.

Victor Manuelle Soy CD (2008)
Contraste buy CD music Rooted in salsa but beloved for his ability to reach beyond the mundane, Victor Manuelle continues his maturation on his 2008 effort, SOY. The vibrant record focuses mostly in two directions, alternatively pumping up the listener with eminently danceable salsa numbers ("Yo No Soy Perdonante") and sultrily wooing his audience into submission on evocative ballads ("Yo Te Queria Querer"). The sleek singer instinctively threads the ever-dramatic songs together with the commanding presence of a savvy veteran and an incorrigible lover of his subject, his words, his world.
Personnel: Johnny Torres (banjo); Jose Prieto (accordion, piano); Angel "Angie" Machado, Jesús Alonso (trumpet); Victor Candelario (trombone); Jose Lugo (piano); Carmelo Alvarez (bongos).
