| | 50 Cent Before I Self-Destruct CDs (2007) With DVD
Raw Emotion album
$13.29 Released without the usual flurry of hype, Before I Self Destruct fulfills 50 Cent's contractual obligation to the Interscope label. It also doubles as a throwback album, returning the rapper to the hunger and hatred of his early mixtapes while skillfully recasting him as a wannabe upstart. That is, for the most part. The four radio-friendly bedroom numbers that conclude the album are out of place but fairly good to dime-piece beautiful, with the best being the Ne-Yo showcase "Baby by Me" ("Have a baby by me, baby/Be a millionaire"). As pleasing as these final numbers are, if you leave the room after the macho bruiser "I Got Swag" ("I'm infinitely special/Girl the Lord is gonna bless you/If you do what I tell you to do"), you'll return to a confusingly different album, one that's as glamorous but less vital. The monstrous run of tracks that leads up to this flash and polish can be summed up by 50's "This ain't Tha Carter/It's Sparta!," a witty, deceptive, and brutish line barked over a prime Dr. Dre beat during the great "Death to My Enemies." On the cut, the producer sounds like he's been digging on RZA, but the tension and dark-night feel he has created for "Psycho" is easily ...

| | 2ND Place Driver ...1 CD (2006) (Import)
Raw Emotion album
$16.69 The band 2nd Place Driver was founded in 2002 by guitar player Bart Dietvorst (ex Wealthy Beggar) and singer Rias Baarda, first as a (home-studio) project. Quickly there after it became a real band and after recording a first E.P. ('2nd Place Driver', 2003) lots of gigs followed and a stunning live reputation was quickly established. This first release got airplay in The Netherlands and Belgium on radiostations such as 3FM, KINK FM and Studio Brussel and a bunch of great reviews in several media followed. Early 2004 a second E.P. ('Leave E.P.', 2004) was released and the story continued with again lots of media attention, airplay and gigs. After those two E.P.'s the official debut album followed in april 2005, entitled '!1'. This album was released in The Netherlands and Belgium by PiTAR. The album was received very well by fans and media and the first single 'Leave' got airplay on radiostations like 3FM, KINK FM and Radio 2. The video for 'Leave' got airplay on TV channels such as MTV and TMF. After this, two radio singles followed and got more airplay. The album draws attention and 2nd Place Driver gets an Essent Award for it. Essent is a big gas & electricity supplier in The Netherlands and gives this award to 10 promissing Dutch acts a year. As a result the band plays the Lowlands Festival (along with acts such as Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age), gets attention on MTV, a promobudget of € 5. 000,- and lots of media attention. In the meantime the band played almost 200 shows, mostly in The Netherlands, in clubs such as Paradiso, 013 and Milky Way and on festivals such as Lowlands, Eurosonic and Parkpop. The band played supports for bands like Soulwax, Racoon, Zornik and Maximo Park. With a new bassplayer the band begins working on new material for a second album in winter 2005-2006. The music:Back to the future with electronic based retrorock. The music of 2nd Place Driver is like a knight's move: one step back and 2 ahead: retrorock with electrobeats or Depeche Mode meets Nine Inch Nails. Gruesome and heartwarming at the same time. | | Hermit Crabs Saw You Dancing CD (2007) (Import)
Raw Emotion CD music
$13.25 On Saw You DancingThe Hermit Crabs share a drummer (Lee Thomson) with fellow Glasgow indie pop band Camera Obscura, they also share a sound -- a lightly strummed, folky indie pop with simple hooks and a plaintive female voice fronting the operation. What they don't share is the same level of songcraft or a willingness to experiment with sound, two things that Camera Obscura excel at. Most of all though, the vocals come up short. Simply put, singer Melanie Whittle is no Tracyanne Campbell. She's a very good singer, no doubt about that, but she lacks the depth and emotional punch that Campbell easily conjures up. It's no crime to fail to measure up to your most obvious inspiration/competition as long as you bring something unique and interesting to the proceedings. The Hermit Crabs succeed at times on Saw You Dancing (a few of the tunes, like the sunny "Feel Good Factor," the nearly rocking "Bad Timing," and the quietly melancholic "Tonight" are memorable) but ultimately they are sunk by the songs that lack compelling hooks or interesting lyrics. They are doomed by comparison, too, because really there is no reason to listen to this album when you ...
