| | Gomers Sofa King Good CD (2006)
Total Girl 2007 CD music
$17.69 This is the debut recording from Madison, Wisconsin's The Gomers. It consists of 26 unique tracks, each touching on a different mood and style. From the biting alternative rock of "Thanks for the Ride, Lady" to the schmaltzy lounge pop of "Sulu" to the "hip," over-bloated production of "It's Not Unusual" to the preposterously silly "Jewish Rapper," Sofa King Good will never fall victim to criticisms of monotony and homogenity. Yes, many of these songs are utterly ridiculous, but beneath it all is an extremely talented band who thankfully doesn't take itself or rock & roll too seriously. Guitarist and chief songwriter Biff Blumfumgagnge appears to be the principal conspirator in this madness. The novelty references to Tom Jones, the Beach Boys, the Osmonds and others notwithstanding, what seems to be at the core of the Gomers is the influence of such off-kilter artists like Stan Ridgeway, Devo, Talking Heads, B-52's and Adrian Belew. Most of the madcap tendancies seem to emanate from the uninhibited Blufmfumgagnge in his playing and songwriting, and the remaining like-minded Gomers follow his lead. This 74 minute compendium of bizarre, fun tunes has been featured on Dr. Demento, the Subgenius Hour of Slack, the Bob & Tom Show, and every Friday at 7:30am on WMMM 105.5fm, this version of "It's Not Unusual" is played. | | Kraai, David & The Saddle Tramps High & Lonesome CD (2007)
Total Girl 2007 album
$13.65 David Kraai (pronounced cry) was born in New York City and raised Upstate in the ever present shadow of the Woodstock music scene. Growing up listening to many diverse styles of music, David eventually attended and graduated from Binghamton University before returning to live in the city of his birth. There he played music constantly and eventually began traveling the country, visiting everywhere; making brief stops to live in Texas, Oklahoma and Los Angeles. In 2001, David returned to Upstate New York and began work on a new batch of songs that would examine and express what he witnessed from America. David’s first outlet for these was as a member of the highly traditional country group The Old States. With their singular sound, The Old States quickly became Upstate favorites and Kraai gained attention as the main songwriter and force behind this group’s high lonesome sound. However, The Old States’ days were numbered and, determined, Kraai went into the studio to capture on tape the songs he had put so much time and effort into crafting. In May 2004, David Kraai released his debut solo album, A Denim Fall. The concept: no frills, just pure examination of the human condition and foundations of songwriting. The album of mellow, Sunday morning, jeans and t-shirt songs and spare, golden, countrified folk music immediately made Kraai a fixture in the New York folk scene. Regularly playing such notable venues as CBGB’s and The Sidewalk Café, invitations soon came for Kraai to pay homage to his predecessors and play at tribute festivals for Gram Parsons, Gene Clark and “Sneaky” Pete Kleinow out in California. It was only a matter of time before the rest of the world caught on and songs off A Denim Fall would begin being played in films and on radio stations as far away as Belgium; one track would even be selected for inclusion on Neil Young’s Living With War Today website as the number 2 protest song of the times. The subsequent years of touring saw Kraai playing onstage with legends like Pete Seeger, Bill Keith (of Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys) and John Simon (producer of The Band ...
| | Maggie Bell Live Montreux July 1981 CD (2007)
Total Girl 2007 CD music
$14.35 For Midnight Flyer, 1980 dawned bright. They recorded their superb self-titled debut album and then embarked on a European tour, opening for Bob Seger. Even the departure of keyboardist John Cook after the band left the studio hadn't slowed Midnight Flyer down. Chris Parren, the perfect replacement, was swiftly enlisted and took to the stage. As 1981 began, Flyer flew back to Europe to support AC/DC, and their album arrived in February while the band bounded back and forth across the Channel, now headlining their own shows. In the autumn, they reunited with the down under bad boys, opening for their U.S. tour. However, the highlight of the busy year came in mid-summer, as Flyer climbed onto the Montreux festival stage and ripped through one of the best shows of their all-too-brief career. Live Montreux July 1981 features the bulk of their show that day, as the band rips through its set, then is joined for two numbers by blues legend Taj Mahal and by the Telecaster master Albert Collins for a further pair. The album kicks off with a rampaging "Hey Boy," one of five songs from their studio album the band performed, the highlight arguably being their glorious take on "Rough Trade." Parren is on fire throughout the show, one-upping Ant Glynne at every conceivably turn, with the good-natured guitarist tossing flaming licks and riffs straight back at ...
