| | Michael Straugh Open Door CD Michael Straugh Discography of CDs
Music is a means of transport. It’s more than just something pleasant to listen to (though that is part of it). On a deeper level, music that can capture your attention and lull you, music that you find yourself soaking into – this is what can be a transport, not just away from the day-to-day, but toward your own peaceful "spaces". The contemplative listener will find in Straugh’s music just these qualities. His understanding of how the best music works, enables him to pull every last bit of potential out of his own music, to make it function exactly the way he wants, which is to the best benefit of the listener. In other words, Straugh's understanding of how the best music works makes his among the best for soothing the soul. | | Winter's Solstice: Silver Anniversary Edition CD (2001) Silver Anniversary Edt
Open Door CD music
$6.15 This is part of Windham Hill Records "A Winter Solstice" series.
One of the most well known productions of the Windham Hill label, which basically invented new age music but prefers the term "contemporary instrumental," has been the WINTER'S SOLSTICE series. Perhaps inspired by the season-based recordings of George Winston, the SOLSTICE albums (which feature tunes from a variety of the label's artists) have always been not Christmas albums per se, but winter albums. Of course, a few Yuletide-oriented tunes do find their way onto this, the anniversary edition of the first volume in the series, but for the most part these are agreeable sonic meditations on a wintry state of mind by the likes of Barbara Higbie, Liz Story, and label honcho Will Ackerman himself. If you listen close enough, you can almost hear the snow falling.
Includes liner notes by Dawn Atkinson.

$11.39 On their third official release, DRIVING FORWARD truly lives up to their name with power, finesse and optimism. Faced with daunting challenges, both personal and as a band, since the release of 2005’s “For the Rest of Our Lives,” their latest disc reflects the determination and positive outlook they’ve taken away from each potential setback.Launched by vocalist/guitarist Jesse Naul in suburban Chicago, DRIVING FORWARD began gigging and recording as a power trio in 2001. The original drummer left the band in early 2002 and was quickly replaced by Naul’s long time friend Greg Ulankiewicz. The resulting combination of their like-minded yet varied influences from prog rock to punk and fusion provided the free-wheeling, hard-rocking direction the band has followed since.Touring frequently across Illinois, the band drew enthusiastic crowds prompting them to record a demo followed closely by an EP, “In Motion.” In 2005, DRIVING FORWARD’S first full-length, “For the Rest of Our Lives,” was released on Carburetor Media. Receiving airplay on major Chicago-area radio stations, the band also garnered interest overseas from the UK and Japan to Brazil and Germany.Following the release of “For the Rest of Our Lives,” the band’s fortunes began to turn. First, Ulankiewicz seriously injured his back leaving him unable to practice or perform for six months. In 2004, bassist Jason Cunefare left the band and was replaced by Roman Niziolek, a veteran of local prog rock and jam bands. Niziolek’s addition further solidified the band’s evolving sound, adding his fluid but sturdy rhythms to the mix.Set to tour the Midwest and east coast in 2007, guitarist Naul, began to experience pain in his left arm. Playing guitar for several hours a day, everyday, over the course of 20-plus years had resulted in a serious repetitive stress injury. After a lengthy series of treatments and conflicting diagnoses, Naul was looking at the possibility of never playing the guitar again. Despite the pain, Naul and the band decided to make the most of their situation and explore their experience in musical form.Limited to playing just a few hours total per week, Naul recorded the guitar tracks that would become the foundation for “Dissolve Your Resistance” over the course of ten months. While Ulankiewicz and Niziolek laid down their parts and got directly involved in the engineering and production of the disc. The lyrics, penned by Naul, tap into the intense physical and emotional issues he faced when dealing with this difficult period in his musical life, ultimately coming through ...
