S.T. Mikael's reputation among Swedish bands with a bent for the psychedelic can be seen in the fact that Mind of Fire -- his first new album in a decade -- features various players from Dungen on it, among other acts. It's a nice tip of the hat from various self-proclaimed spiritual children, no question, but Mind of Fire is a bit uneven, on when it's on, pleasantly there otherwise. Those high points, though, are killer -- a good example being "Wizdom," which eschews slabs of drone or a spaced-out feeling for a full-throttled embrace of funk instead, with results that are familiar enough but which contrast against the rest of the album, and Mikael's own reputation, very nicely. In contrast is something like "Gyrax," a bit of a rambling stoner fest that coasts on atmospheres but barely lasts in the memory like it could. Elsewhere, there are simple but sharp takes on acid folk via tight grooves, thanks to "Into Your Mind," and low-key jams like "Are You Dreaming Again?," all nice but not entirely remarkable. A nice touch, however, does occur midway through the disc -- namely, Mikael himself introducing the bonus tracks in a calm but engaged way. If, as he says, the mind was designed to scream "I'm back," the bonus tracks help clarify where he's been, a collection of roughly recorded demos and spare cuts that are all enjoyable if not particularly memorable. Still, songs like the acoustic, plaintive "Did You Feel?" and the booping "Organ Prelude" are nice touches. ~ Ned RaggettUncut (p.105) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "The first portion of MIND OF FIRE duly consists of studio-centred psychedelic funk that leans heavily on the wah-wah pedal..." Mind Of Fire album
$19.10 Whereas Alice Cooper's first two studio albums, 1969's PRETTIES FOR YOU and 1970's EASY ACTION, tended more towards the trippy excesses of the hippie era, their next one, 1971's LOVE IT TO DEATH introduced the world to the heavy sound that Cooper would soon be taking to the top. With the invaluable production assistance of future Pink Floyd/Lou Reed cohort Bob Ezrin, LOVE IT TO DEATH proved Alice Cooper's first truly great album, and served as their commercial breakthrough.
That staple of teen alienation, "I'm Eighteen," is the most iconic cut, but every single track on LOVE IT TO DEATH is outstanding. Plenty of other ...
| | Joe Walsh Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get CD (1973) Gold
Mind Of Fire CD music
$19.10 "Rocky Mountain Way," the tune that opens Joe Walsh's sophomore release (and remains one of his best-known songs), is a textbook example of Walsh's strengths. The song is driven by a slinky hard rock groove that boasts crunchy, distorted guitars, barrelhouse piano, wiry solos, and a catchy, singalong chorus--proving Walsh's penchant for mixing rock elements and radio-ready accessibility with a sense of wit and fun. The rest of SMOKER YOU DRINK, PLAYER YOU GET follows suit, with the mid-tempo rock ballad "Bookends," the bouncy, Latin-tinged "Happy Ways," and the airy, wistful "Dreams" keeping the stylistic mix lively.
Walsh is flanked here by Kenny Pasarelli on bass and Joe Vitale on drums, keyboards, and flute. Production help from Bill Szymczyk helps give the record its signature ...

| | Tom Petty Live Anthology CDs (2009)
Mind Of Fire songs
$19.98 It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-1985, Live Anthology almost overcompensates for the long wait by offering almost too much music, cherrypicking highlights from 1978 to 2007. In its simplest incarnation, Live Anthology is a super-affordable, four-disc box set running 48 tracks, which is eight cuts longer than Springsteen's box, plenty long enough for most fans, but in its deluxe version, available only through Best Buy, there's an additional CD, plus two previously unreleased DVDs -- a 1978 New Years Eve concert from Santa Monica, a documentary called 400 Days shot during the Wildflowers tour -- a Blu-Ray edition of all 62 tracks on the five-CD version, a vinyl copy of the 1976 Official Live 'Leg LP, plus a book and lithograph, along with other assorted bonuses. Certainly, the deluxe edition lives up to its billing, offering enough extras to justify its price tag, but the standard edition is plenty generous as it is, serving up enough consistently strong music from throughout the decades, ...

| | Beyonce I Am...Sasha Fierce CD (2008) Bonus Track; Deluxe Edition
Mind Of Fire CD music
$9.99 I AM. SASHA FIERCE represents another change of pace for Beyoncé. Unlike the relatively streamlined, retro-soul inflected B'DAY, I AM... is a sprawling two-disc set designed to reflect two conflicting sides of Beyoncé's musical personality. The first disc sports reflective, sometimes moody ballads, while the second, attributed to Beyoncé's brash alter ego, Sasha Fierce, is loaded with propulsive dance-floor fillers. Except for this stylistic divide, I AM. pays only nominal attention to its supposed concept, focusing instead on a set of excellent, radio-ready songs--neatly avoiding the possibility of I AM. becoming some sort of Chris Gaines-style conceptual disaster. Though the second disc, which boasts the synth-drenched lead single, "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)," is more immediately gratifying, the impeccably produced ballads of the first disc represent a vast improvement on the often awkward torch songs that weighed down Beyoncé's first solo record.
In non-Deluxe Edition form, Beyoncé's third ...
