| | Halford III: Winter Songs CD (2009) Special Edition; Digipak
Happy End Of The World CD music
$13.75 At first glance, Halford's entry into the crowded holiday market looks like a parody. Heavy metal and Christmas make for strange bedfellows, and WINTER SONGS' pastoral cover art -- which depicts Rob Halford staring wistfully (with a goatee and shades) into a soft, snowy pine forest -- screams Spinal Tap. That said, the Judas Priest frontman approaches yuletide standards like "We Three Kings" and "What Child Is This?" with the same conviction that he applied to Priest classics like "Electric Eye" and "Freewheel Burning" -- it probably helps that most traditional Christmas hymns tend to fall into the same brooding minor keys that serve as the foundation for most, if not all, heavy metal songs. While WINTER SONGS, like Twisted Sister's excellent 2006 TWISTED CHRISTMAS collection, may not be mainstream enough for the department ...
| | Rockstar Rock Star CD (2001) Original Soundtrack
Happy End Of The World music CDs
$9.99 The most booty-kickin' spoof Metal group to come down the pike since Spinal Tap is Steel Dragon, the Mark Wahlberg-fronted hair band in the film ROCK STAR. Along with other '80s metal tracks and modern tunes, this soundtrack makes for a great listen.
ROCK STAR is based on Tim "Ripper" Owens, who left his Judas Priest cover band to join the real thing. The cover band in the film is Blood Pollution, who give us the catchy, ...

| | Scorpions Tokyo Tapes [hip-O) CD (1978) Remastered
Happy End Of The World CD music
$11.99 If you played in a hard rock band during the '70s, what were you likely to be doing circa 1978? Why, recording a live album, of course. Preferably a double vinyl set, and in Japan to boot. The Scorpions were no exception, and in fact, their Tokyo Tapes were captured only days after Cheap Trick's At Budokan in April 1978. Though hardly as inspired or successful, the Tokyo Tapes set still serves as an ideal greatest-hits collection of the Scorpions' first decade. This recording also showcases the spectacular playing (and occasionally, the dreadful singing) of guitarist Uli Jon Roth, who would soon leave the band for a misguided solo career, but displays some jaw-dropping technique here, most notably on the epic "We'll Burn the Sky." The rest of the band also puts in competent performances on such early standards as "In Trance," "Fly to the Rainbow," ...

Happy End Of The World album
$15.35 Formed by brothers Saul Bihari and Jules Bihari in 1945, Modern Records was one of the truly great record labels of the rise of rhythm & blues, and while this is the fourth disc in Ace's Yet More Mellow Cats 'N' Kittens series of collections drawn from Modern's back catalog, this disc leaves no doubt that there's still plenty worthwhile stuff left in their vaults. Featuring a handful of unreleased tracks along with classic 78 sides, Yet More Mellow Cats 'N' Kittens focuses on some of the lesser-known acts who recorded for Modern, though Johnny Otis and Little Esther team up for the fine and bluesy "I Got a Guy," and Jimmy Witherspoon wails hard on "I'm Just a Country Boy." But if names ...
