Into The Night album
$10.75 A STREET BETWEEN SUNRISE AND SUNSET is a 2003 release by progressive metal rockers Satellite, featuring "The Evening Wind."
It took a few years for the members of Collage, Poland's neo-progressive rock bandwagon, to pick themselves up after the group's breakup in the mid-'90s. A Street Between Sunrise and Sunset can be considered as the group's rightful heir. Written almost completely by drummer Wojtek Szadkowski (who used to be Collage's main songwriter), the album is performed by a cast of ex-Collage musicians (some of them appearing as guests). Lead singer Robert Amirian plays the soft card, aiming for the dreamy seduction of Pendragon instead of the lung-heavy theatrics of Fish. It serves the songs right, as they tend to be on the unassertive side of things. Szadkowski's writing consists mostly of an elegant midtempo propelled by a straightforward rhythm section, topped by simple melodies and featuring interesting instrumental breaks for guitarists Sarhan and Mirek Gil to fill in. The melodies walk a fine line between catchy and trite, and here lies the album's fate, since your appreciation of them will determine your perception of the whole project. The album is at least part conceptual, lyrics dealing with divergences of opinions, a man leaving his loved ones to find himself and come back home. The topic is not new, but it is elegantly phrased in image-filled verses that run into a lot of prog rock clichés -- but they are very well-written nonetheless. Highlights include the opening "The Evening Wind" and "Fight," the latter a punchy five-minute song. Fans of vintage ...

| | Tangent Not As Good As The Book CDs (2008)
Into The Night album
$17.49 This prog super-group, comprising members of the Flower Kings, Van Der Graaf Generator, and Parallel or 90 Degrees, epitomize the best aspects of the so-called Canterbury school of British spectacle. On their fourth studio album, longish, ambulatory song structures and an energetic mood provide an uplifting and engaging listen that will make older prog fans nostalgic for the 1970s, while demonstrating to younger listeners just how it's done.
Progressive rock, for the most part, has not been known for having a strong sense of humor. It was shaped, after all, by musicians who believed that if third stream jazz musicians could exalt Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, and Chopin as their idols, there was no reason why rock musicians shouldn't do the same. But Not as Good as the Book is a prog rock release that definitely has a sense of humor; in fact, humor is a vital part of this CD set. A highly conceptual effort, Not as Good as the Book is written from the perspective of aging baby boomers who lived to see the 21st century and are not happy with the ways in which the world has changed. Historically, most rock music -- from punk to rockabilly to grunge -- has been very youth-focused. But on this release, the Tangent offer the perspective of middle-aged boomers whose youthful idealism has been replaced by cynicism and pessimism -- boomers who, back in the '60s and '70s, looked forward to the future but were disillusioned after they got there. They started out optimistic and hopeful, but when the '90s and 2000s arrived, they received a rude awakening and found that instead of getting better, society became worse. Nonetheless, Not as Good as the Book manages to laugh in the face of disillusionment, and humor (albeit dark humor) ...
| | Karmakanic Who's The Boss In The Factory? CD (2008)
Into The Night CD music
$14.55 Number three in Karmakanic's discography marks no real departure from the previous two albums or from the sound of leader Jonas Reingold's main engagement the Flower Kings. In fact, fans of the mighty Swedish prog rock battalion will feel right at home with Who's the Boss in the Factory? The Flower Kings' bassist can carry the band's torch as high and bright as Roine Stolt or Tomas Bodin, and -- in the case of this particular album -- with less inclination to push things in a different direction. "Send a Message from the Heart" and "Two Blocks from the Edge" could easily have been recorded by Reingold's headlining band, and they would have figured well, although the 20-minute "Send a Message from the Heart" plays the "positive vibrations" card (a TFK trademark) a bit too strongly. "Let in Hollywood" is a fun single-sized song in 7/8 about having a hit single with a song in 7/8 -- silly topic, granted, but the song is catchy, nicely arranged, and very well produced. The only subpar track on this album is "Who's the Boss in the Factory?" Clocking in at 13 minutes, it adopts a reductively square and leaded four-to-the-floor beat, while tackling its topic (accountability) in a naïve, unsubstantial way. But the most irritating characteristic of this song is the close resemblance between its chorus and Roger Waters' "What God Wants (Part 2)." That track aside, this is an enjoyable prog rock album, with a host of guest appearances from Flower Kings alumni (Tomas Bodin, Zoltan Csörsz), members of closely related projects (the Tangent's Andy Tillison and Theo Travis), and even accordion player Lelo Nika, who performs ...
