Aaliyah album
$8.99 Suprisingly enough, it no longer takes an adult to perform as an adult in today's music industry, especially one filled with so much young talent. Proving that her age has no bearing on her music's maturity, R. Kelly's protege Aaliyah debuts with AGE AIN'T NOTHING BUT A NUMBER. Aaliyah complements the album's material, appealing to both R&B and hip-hop listeners, while managing to "keep it smooth with a jazz attitude."
Detroit's Aaliyah surprised the public when she succesfully hit with her first single, "Back And Forth," which found its market on the club scene. The album's other highlights are soft, mellow tunes like "At Your Best (You Are Love)," "Young Nation," "Age Ain't Nothing But A Number" and "Down With The Clique." Producing all tracks, R. Kelly definitely has a `90s swing evident on this project. Also obvious is that Kelly writes all but one song, because what fifteen-year-old can drive or make love. It's no secret that R. Kelly is the mastermind behind this endearing album.

| | Tupac Me Against The World CD (1995)
Aaliyah CD music
$15.35 ME AGAINST THE WORLD was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "Dear Mama" was nominated for Best Rap Solo Performance.
Forget everything you've heard and assumed about rapper/actor 2Pac and think only of his music, which has always stood in the shadow of his lifestyle. ME AGAINST THE WORLD tries to make sense of all the stormy events that have surrounded the gifted vocalist--transforming 2Pac into the "rap star" he's always yearned to be--and turns out to be his best work yet.
ME AGAINST THE WORLD seriously connects the rapper with his audience by remaining "real." Although much of the public is already familiar with the all-too politicized/publicized life of Tupac Shakur, the album disputes their perception and serves as his halo. "If I Die 2Nite" couples 2Pac's intense thoughts with the flava-in-ya-ear sound provided by hip-hop super producer Easy Mo Bee. 2Pac softens his tone on "Dear Mama," celebrating the one woman who has stuck by him through it all. The album also focuses on issues known and experienced not only by this "hip-hop outlaw," but by those who share his lifestyle. Many "thugs" have lost their homies and struggled to keep themselves alive in the hood, and so has 2Pac; and his mourning is manifested on "So Many Tears," which is enhanced by a sample of Stevie Wonder's harmonica. "Can U Get Away" carefully alerts women involved in abusive relationships, and labels 2Pac as their saviour. Giving props to the New York rap scene, "Old School" is a tribute to the founders of hip-hop and reminisces about "how it was." Musically, the comfortable tracks help convey positive messages ("Young Niggaz"), and lyrically, 2Pac is, as always, on point.
Engineers include: Tony Pizarro, Jay Lean, Paul Arnold.
Personnel: 2Pac (vocals); Jill Rose (vocals); Ronnie Vann (guitar); Reggie Green, Eboni Foster, Richard Serrell, Kim Armstrong, Natasha Walker, Puff Johnson (background vocals).

| | Missy Elliott Supa Dupa Fly CD (1997)
Aaliyah music CDs
$5.79 "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" was nominated for a 1988 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance.
SUPA DUPA FLY was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album.
As a member of the R&B group Sista, Missy Elliott went almost unnoticed. It wasn't until years later, when she placed her trademark "hee-hee-hee-hee-ha" lyrics on a Gina Thompson remix that she achieved recognition. Missy's songwriting credits include a number of R&B hits (SWV's "Can We" and Aaliyah's "4 Page Letter"), and her familiar vocal style has been featured on some of the year's hottest remixes, including Li'l Kim's "Not Tonight".
Produced by Timbaland (Ginuwine, Aaliyah), SUPA DUPA FLY showcases the studio whiz's unique recording techniques. The tempos here are much slower than on the average hip-hop release, with rhythms akin to dancehall music. Missy doesn't limit herself to rap, either. Many of the songs on SUPA DUPA FLY fall easily into the R&B bag, especially when Missy swaps her hard-core hip-hop lyrics for a smooth laid-back approach.
Recorded at Master Sound Studios, Virginia Beach, Virginia.

| | Tyrese CD (1998)
Aaliyah songs
$7.59 "Sweet Lady" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Funk guitar, '70s soul string arrangements, hip-hop-inflected beats and sophisticated electronica-derived mixing techniques all play a part in the musical pastiche that is Tyrese's self-titled debut. While the album falls squarely in the contemporary R&B mold, and is bound to appeal to fans of the genre, Tyrese skillfully avoids many of the style's cliches. Though his voice is smooth and flexible, he never engages in R. Kelly-style histrionics, preferring to play it cool and communicate the emotions of the songs without over-extending himself. While all the tunes here are carefully produced and arranged, there's an agreeable grittiness that sets Tyrese apart from many of his contemporaries.
Engineers include: Ben Arrindell, Ken Deranteriasian, Michael Teelucksingh.
Personnel: Tyrese (vocals); Troy Taylor (vocals, various instruments); Glen Mosley (various instruments, programming); Nate Love (various instruments); Jake Job (keyboards); Trevor Job (bass instrument, drums, percussion, programming).

| | JS Ice Cream CD (2003)
Aaliyah album
$8.65 Principally recorded at Rock Land, Chicago, Illinois; Conjunction, Los Angeles, California and Tracken Place, Hollywood, California.
JS stands for the Johnson Sisters, Kim and Kandy, two young and harmonious R&B vocalists learned in the art of couching subtly (and often not-so-subtly) suggestive bits of innuendo in the sweetest, lightest, most innocent beats. Though young, the two sisters have been singing together since childhood and have a bit of a history in the music biz, doing session work for many artists, including Christina Aguilera before being discovered by soul legend Ronald Isley.
Considering the subject and the tenor of the lyrics, it's not overly surprising that controversial, if undeniably talented, R. Kelly has his hands all over JS's debut ICE CREAM, writing and producing the majority of the tracks, including the title track and debut single. Dripping in soulful sensuality, but sweet as confectioner's sugar, "Ice Cream" spills double-entendre after double entendre over a nursery rhyme backbeat. The sisters go even further on the R. Kelly-esque "Slow Grind;" the title pretty much sums up the fetching jam. "Love Angel" and "Someone" show the duo capable of simple love songs as well. Overall, JS provides an alluringly physical debut in the vein of TLC on ICE CREAM.
Additional personnel includes: R. Kelly, Ronald Isley (vocals); Walter "Lil Walt" Millsap, III (various instruments); Donnie Lyle (guitar, bass); Rodney East (keyboards); Ian Mereness (programming).
Background Singers For The Isley Brothers.
Producers include: R. Kelly, Walter Millsap III, Ian Mereness, Andy Gallas, Bob Robinson.
