The Devil Makes Three performs acoustic blues and folk music with a spirit of fun and irreverence usually reserved for the original pre-WWII recordings from which the combo draws inspiration. Eschewing virtuosity and scholarly rigid adherence to classic forms, the drummer-less New England-based trio employs acoustic guitar, upright bass, banjo, harmonica, and musical saw to explore themes of death, excessive alcohol consumption, and other generally dark subjects in a shambling, danceable style that would fit nicely on a summer festival stage alongside Jack Johnson or G. Love.
On its 2008 self-titled disc, The Devil Makes Three evokes a campground hoedown or late-night 1962 Greenwich Village folk-revival jam session. "Beneath the Piano" matches a brisk, polka-like rhythm to lyrics mining territory somewhere between a Bukowski novel and Jim Croce's "You Don't Mess Around With Jim," while the slightly herky-jerky feel of "Old Number Seven" mirrors the boozy confusion of the narrator's paean to Jack Daniel's whiskey. The sound of average folks casting out demons with simple instruments and a few turns around the old barn floor, THE DEVIL MAKES THREE serves as a welcome reminder that blues and folk music were once as celebratory as they were serious. Devil Makes Three album
$6.95 When four of the world's funniest black stand-up comics came together to celebrate their crownings as the "Kings of Comedy," acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee decided to film two of their most memorable shows. The result is THE ORIGINAL KINGS OF COMEDY, a raucous concert film that takes its cue from classic performers such as Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy. The host of the evening, Steve Harvey, spends most of his time criticizing modern music--namely hip-hop--for forgetting to include love in its songs, missing the days when black music was passionate and romantic. D.L. Hughley focuses on universal topics such as work, as well as taking his time to criticize certain unfortunate audience ...

Devil Makes Three CD music
$11.35 Comedian and ventriloquist Jeff Dunham hits the stage with hilarious new pals Achmed the Dead Terrorist and Melvin the Super hero, as well as old favorites Peanut, Walter, and Jose Jalapeno, in this sidesplitting performance at Washington D.C.'s Warner Theater.
More than just a stand-up comic, Jeff Dunham is a one-man comedy troupe--a ring-leader in a circus of snark. The veteran ventriloquist may be the only one with vocal chords, but he’s often the least vocal, playing straight man to a steam trunk of personalities: Achmed the Dead Terrorist, a goofball skeleton still fighting the infidels; Peanut, an odd purple creature with a fast mouth; Jose Jalapeño, a smooth-talking pepper on a stick; Bubba J, NASCAR’s biggest fan; and Walter, a dirty old man who speaks his mind. Together with his hilarious and irreverent puppets, Dunham riffs on everything from politics to family life, and slays the audience with his quick-witted banter. SPARK OF INSANITY features one of Dunham’s funniest performances, recorded live at Washington D.C.’s Warner Theater.

| | Nedelle Republic Of Two CD (2003)
Devil Makes Three songs
$10.25 On the first listen to Republic of Two you find a subtle soul debut. Republic of Two is more than just a new soul record. Nedelle -- or Nedelle Torrisi -- presents a record that touches on soul, jazz, bossa nova, funk, and rock. In covering that many styles, most artists would force the fact that they are showcasing these styles. Nedelle performs these in a consistent manner, keeping the record interesting, whether it be the funk of "Come Around," the blues of "I Lied," the bossa feel of "Lament," or the light rock/funk of "Too Late." The song construction is interesting, but the focus here is on the vocals. Nedelle has a wonderful, slow vibrato, giving her the feel of an indie Sade or a less-produced Nikka Costa. The charm of Republic of Two comes from the intimate nature of the recording and the length. Her voice is direct and heartfelt in the intimate setting of the light music; it leaves the listener wondering at times why she felt the need to provide backing vocals that may take away from the intimacy. Nedelle knows when to end a track, not letting a groove get overdone. The second half of the record is not as strong as the first, but the fact that the record clocks in at 24 minutes doesn't take away from the success of the record as a whole. Nedelle's Republic of Two is a memorable first effort. ~ David Serra
Nedelle grew up singing to herself and her family in the sleepy town of Vacaville, CA. She learned to play violin, taking lessons from age seven onwards. Along the way, she picked up piano and guitar, feeling them to be better instruments for composing and arranging her own songs. Her father was a jazz drummer and her mother a dedicated pianist. Her own musical moments are intermixed with memories of listening to her father's vinyl records and her mom's impromptu recitals. She now calls Oakland home, where she's part of a budding new pop scene.Nedelle exists somewhere between Ella Fitzgerald and Everything But the Girl, with vocal harmonies reminiscent of The Shirelles. At times tender and romantic, at others lovelorn and drained, and sometimes downright sexy, Nedelle's music mixes classic blues sentiment with modern pop stylings. Combining jazz melodies and lush production, the result is something new and quite obviously special.Republic of Two is Nedelle's first album. It features eleven of the first songs she's ever written, which she produced and archived with vintage ...
