| | John Denver Rocky Mountain Christmas CD (1975)
Kesz Holiday Hits 2007 music CDs
$6.09 This 1998 reissue contains 5 bonus tracks (including the previously
unreleased "White Christmas") not included on the original release.
John Denver's music always had a warm, home-spun quality to it, so it isn't surprising that his 1975 holiday effort, Rocky Mountain Christmas, is a wonderfully low-key and friendly Christmas album. Divided between classic carols and new numbers, such as the fine "Aspenglow" and "Christmas for Cowboys," the album is an appealing, pretty record, perfect for late nights by the fireside. The 1998 CD reissue adds five bonus tracks: "Jingle Bells," "White Christmas," "The Music is You," "Perhaps Love," and "Dreamland Express." ~ Rodney Batdorf

Kesz Holiday Hits 2007 album
$14.49 DARK SIDE OF THE MOON was a benchmark record. It turned the musical world on its ear with a hitherto unseen combination of sounds, and changed things considerably for Pink Floyd. For this project, Pink Floyd resurrected older and unfinished numbers, some of which came from the multitude of soundtracks the band members had previously worked on. The film ZABRISKIE POINT, a study of American materialism from a foreigner's perspective, provided "Us and Them" (originally titled "The Violence Sequence"). Waters rewrote "Breathe" after its appearance on his and avant-garde composer Ron Geesin's score for THE BODY, a surreal medical documentary.
Floyd and their long-time engineer, Alan Parsons, used a ...

| | Amoeba Watchful CD (1997)
Kesz Holiday Hits 2007 music CDs
$8.69 The second album by the ambient pop duo of Amoeba (multi-instrumentalists Robert Rich and Rick Davies) was released at the height of interest in electronica, when bands like Stereolab, Air and Mouse on Mars were all exploring different aspects of drones, hypnotic patterns, and deep-space bliss-outs. It would have been easy for the pair to explore a similar brand of Euro-synth cool, but instead, Watchful is a lovely, warm album that has much more in common with both serious post-minimalist composers like Wim Mertens or Gavin Bryars, and with low-key ambient pop acts like Virginia Astley and late-era Talk Talk. Indeed, at times Watchful threatens to dissolve into standard-issue new age mush, as on the opening "Inside," which adds a bodhran-like drum pulse and David Gilmour-style slide guitar to the minimal synths and lush arrangements through deliberately under-mixed vocals. But the duo's mixture of electronic and traditional instruments and their knack for creating near-pop song structures for their floaty melodies makes Watchful that rare near-ambient album that repays close listening. ~ Stewart Mason
Amoeba WatchfulAlternative Press: rated 5/5 - Essential: "Sounding vaguely like Robert Wyatt on Valium: music for life-weary somnambulists. Embracing the meloncholy that lingers just beyond the thin veil of hope, the songs on Watchful linger in the netherworld of sinking memory and damaged dreams... This is a superb and unusual album that mesmerizes and engulfs. (Mark Burbey)(Brent Wilcox): AMOEBA is the haunting, beautiful work of Robert Rich and Rick Davies. Robert Rich is well known in the ambient/electronica world for the attention he gives sonic details in his solo soundscapes, and he brings that ear here to an album of -- essentially -- pop music. It's a diffuse sort of pop music, surprisingly difficult to describe. Relaxed but carefully detailed, hypnotic, melodic, a bit melancholy. There's a small, growing sub-genre out there, of pop music that creates mood with pauses and silences, noises and textures -- reference points go back to Robert ...

Kesz Holiday Hits 2007 songs
$13.09 This probably isn't quite the response Akimbo were shooting for when they released Harshing Your Mellow in 2001, but anyone who was into the first couple waves of hardcore punk back in the early to mid-'80s probably found this album to be a rather charming nostalgia piece. Specifically, Akimbo here are seemingly channeling the spirit of SST Records from circa 1984 to 1988, after the members of Black Flag discovered Black Sabbath and weed, but before Nirvana and Soundgarden turned up to tweak the scene just enough to send it aboveground. Certainly song titles like "When I Am King I Will Spit on the Corpse of Ray Manzarek" and "I Wish the Dead Could Come Back to ...
