(5 Customer Reviews)
Issued in late 2007, GET OFF THE STAGE finds veteran hip-hop artist Too Short (born Todd Shaw) once again indulging in his pimp persona. Clearly enjoying his status as an elder statesman of West Coast rap, Too Short offers up plenty of laid-back, smooth-flowing rhymes, most notably on "This My One," which features fellow Californian rapper E-40.

| | Pretty Ricky Bluestars CD (2005)
Get Off The Stage CD music
$10.09 "Get You Right," a smooth throwback ballad from Miami outfit Pretty Ricky's debut, BLUESTARS, features a hardcore rap that name-checks 1990s groups H-Town and Jodeci. While the four youthful brothers of Pretty Ricky were likely in grade school when these artists had their hits, it's a fitting reference; the quartet's sound reveals an innate feel for the New Jack Swing sound of that time. This approach is evident in both the record's production and its raw sensuality, and the overall vibe is updated with a Dirty South sensibility.
Pretty Ricky features three rappers--Slick, Spectacular, and Diamond--augmented by the resonant voice of Pleasure, whose alluring style falls somewhere between Stevie Wonder and R. Kelly. The subject matter of BLUESTARS tends toward that of the latter (but often hints at the depth of the former), moving from seductions sweet and innocent ("I ...

| | Too Short Blow The Whistle CD (2006)
Get Off The Stage album
$8.49 Too Short is arguably the first gangsta rapper: he was releasing explicit tales of sex, violence, and street life as early as 1983. That claim alone, not to mention his string of gold and platinum albums, gives him serious clout, and 2006's BLOW THE WHISTLE sustains it. With help from hot producers Lil Jon and Jazze Pha, and a cadre of guests including Snoop Dogg and will.i.am, BLOW THE WHISTLE sounds remarkably au courant, with ample doses of crunk and hyphy beats. But Too Short manages keeps it old-school ...

| | Better Than Average Weekend: A Tribute To Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet CD (2001)
Get Off The Stage music CDs
$11.39 This entertaining tribute gives props to Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, the Canadian instrumental combo perhaps best known for contributing the theme song to Kids in the Hall. A stable of surf guitar and garage rock revivalists does the feting, with types like Squid Vicious, Insect Surfers, Mulchmen, and Spy-Fi making appearances. The material lacks that certain punk-influenced grit that really defined the Shadowy Men's sound. Still, the bands here get lots of credit for earnest, energetic playing, especially in the reverb guitar department. Highlights include Dirk Doom's version of the group's most famous track, the Deoras' "Siesta Cinema," and a brooding Urban Surf Kings take on "Memories of Gay Paree." ~ Johnny Loftus
A tasteful and loving tribute to Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet - the guys that wrote and played all of that cool music used in the Kids in the Hall TV series. They actually recorded three full albums and a ton of singles and compilation tracks. Really! This is a very cool tribute featuring 22 of the top surf and instrumental combos from the U.S. and, of course, Canada including The Deoras (featuring Mike Palm of Agent Orange), The Sadies, The Insect Surfers, The Surfdusters, and Squid Vicious. Here's the liner notes from the CD.Why Shadowy Men? What's the deal? Like a lot of fans outside of Toronto, my first exposure was through The Kids In The Hall television series. I enjoyed the show, but I just couldn't get the theme song and the link music out of my head. I finally found a store locally that had a Shadowy Men CD (specifically DIM THE LIGHTS, CHILL THE HAM), so I snatched it ...
| | Marcelo D2 Apresenta Hip Hop Rio CD (2002)
Get Off The Stage songs
$16.29 Brazilian hip hop duo Marcelo D2's album features 13 tracks, including "Nucleo Sucata Sound" and "Black Alien & Speed."
Hosted by arguably the most popular rapper in Brazil, Marcelo D2, Apresenta Hip Hop Rio is a compilation that showcases a selection of lesser-known underground groups representing various sections of Rio de Janeiro; a kind of Brazilian Lyricist Lounge project that even follows the format of the original with D2 playing master of ceremonies on a series of interludes as if on-stage between acts. Solo MC Mahal (the son of MPB artist Luíz Melodia) kicks things off with an energetic call-to-arms on album opener "MC's Emergentes," letting off barrages of book knowledge that would make KRS-One proud, between rousing hooks that call for Brazilian MCs to come together and create a strong national identity. Representing Niterói, D2's former comrade in the group Planet Hemp, Black Alien and Speed, flip wicked dancehall-inflected verses over a menacing mandolin loop on "Rude Boy Style." While the MC/DJ duo Inumanos take the old-school route, with MC Aori laying animated shout-raps over a minimalist beat built on pounding drums and '80s-era electro effects. Female group Negaativa spit simplistic party-oriented lyrics ...
