Ireland's first black metal band, Primordial have been making their Celtic-tinted thrash for close to 16 years without flagging. Their sixth album, TO THE NAMELESS DEAD, shows them evolving further from their black roots to create a textured, almost romantic sound that's equal parts harshness and pastoral beauty. "Heathen Tribes" takes advantage of the band's ethnic background to introduce traditional Irish instruments into the thick metal stew, while the moody slow-burners "Gallows Hymn" and "Failures Burden" cast twilight shadows on emerald hillsides. TO THE NAMELESS DEAD's sound is such that the title could refer to either comrades lost in battle or lovers lost to time.
Primordial: A.A. Nemtheanga (vocals); M. O Floinn, C. MacUilliam (guitars); P. MacAmlaigh (bass guitar); S. O Laoghaire (drums).
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.50) - "[T]his is a rough-and-ready offering, pushing their gloomy black metal tendencies into new, ever bleak pastures..." To The Nameless Dead album
$9.79 In their early days, Primordial played a hybrid of black metal and pagan metal inspired by their native Ireland. Over time, their sound became more idiosyncratic, arguably culminating on The Gathering Wilderness. The album features one of the best recordings ever heard in metal. It may not be as loud as its contemporaries, but that's because it avoids over-compression and keeps its dynamics. The drums sound beautifully natural, guitars sizzle and burn, and the production retains a ragged ...

| | Sada Sat Kaur Angel's Waltz CD (2003)
To The Nameless Dead songs
$20.29 Sada Sat Kaur, a California-based Kundalini yoga instructor, updates and beautifies the joyous sounds of Germukhi chanting for the stressed-out modern age. In addition to lovely vocals, tracks are filled with a rich array of instruments, including harmonium, tabla, keyboards, and even pedal steel guitar. "Ra Ma Da Sa" mixes tabla, sitar, deep synth samples, lush vocal harmonies, and Kaur's hypnotic, soothing chanting, all combining and increasing in power as the track progresses. "Adi Shakti" with its spine-tingling drones and male backing vocals doubling the sitar line, has a similarly expansive effect that will either put one in deep trance or vibrate their resistant ego into the dust. There are even touches of cool jazz, such as the mournful piano that opens "Guru Guru Wahe Guru." English translations of the chants are included in the liner notes, along with instructions for performing accompanying meditations.
This is Sada Sat Kaur's first album. That, in and of itself, should be a source of astonishment. For over 30 years she has toured the world, chanting mantras and singing kirtan in ashrams, concert halls, schools, public parks. In India, audiences have been known to flock to the American homeopath and yoga teacher as if she were the Beatles. "We play to crowds of 200,000 people," she says. "They want to touch you and get your autograph. They hear that these American Sikhs are going to sing, and you can't even see the end of the sea of people."For decades that sea never managed to hoist Sada Sat towarda recording studio-until now. On this, her debut album, you'll come across ancient chants, chants performed in the centuries-old language of Gurmukhi, but you'll also pick up traces of her youthful immersion in bluegrass and folk. In the studio she leaned toward producer Jeremy Toback and said, "Don't take this the wrong way, but I really like country music." Voila, in marched roots-music virtuoso Greg Leisz, who's graced recordings by everyone from Joni Mitchell to Lucinda Williams to Wilco, and who can be heard here exploring the astral plane on banjo, pedal steel, lap steel, and dobro. Twang chant? Maybe the Ganges and the Mississippi aren't so far apart, after all. Sada Sat Kaur's voice has a way of simultaneously ...
