$7.99 | | Ray Davies Kinks Choral Collection CD (2009)
Meeting Again
$14.38 Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies. His very presence as arranger and lead vocal means The Kinks Choral Collection isn't nearly as stuffy and middlebrow as so many of these orchestral rock albums; he manages to inject some semblance of rock & roll by pushing the songs forward with guitar, and letting the rhythms swing instead of plod. This looseness is the first big surprise of the album. The second is its unrepentant but quite possibly accidental silliness, how many of the major guitar riffs are transposed for choir, an audacious idea in concept that's simply goofy ...

| | Ornette Coleman Art Of The Improvisers CD (1961)
Meeting Again
$13.59 ART OF THE IMPROVISORS is a collection of outtakes culled from sessions between 1959 and 1961, a period--which many praise as Ornette Coleman's finest--that yielded such landmark recordings as THE SHAPE OF JAZZ TO COME and FREE JAZZ. Given the explosive, revolutionary quality of Coleman's musical vision (these compositions sound futuristic even today) and the impeccable personnel (a variation on Coleman's early Atlantic quartet), ART adds up to much more than a bundle of odds and ends.
Tracks like "The Circle With a Hole in the Middle," and "The Alchemy of Scott La Faro" (in which La Faro provides a blistering bass line that propels the song into the stratosphere) highlight Coleman's frenetic "free" mode. On these cuts, Coleman's elastic alto lines, with their expressive, emotional illogic, counterbalance Don Cherry's jagged, fast-forward trumpet solos. Elsewhere, the ensemble uses tradition as a springboard for invention, as on the swinging "The Legend of Bebop" and the tender, evocative ballad "Just For You." As with most of Coleman's work, the presence of challenging ideas, keen technical facility, and an exploratory sensibility makes for fresh, engaging material. This set is a valuable supplement to the artist's already legendary Atlantic albums.
Like many of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides, The Art of the Improvisers was recorded in numerous sessions from 1959-1961 and assembled for the purpose of creating a cohesive recorded statement. Its opening track, "The Circle with the Hole in the Middle," from 1959, with the classic quartet of Don Cherry, Ed Blackwell, and Charlie Haden, is one of Coleman's recognizable pieces of music. Essentially, the band is that quartet with two very notable exceptions: The last tracks on each side feature a different bass player. On the end of side one, the great Scott LaFaro weighs in on "The Alchemy of Scott La Faro," and Jimmy Garrison weighs in on "Harlem's Manhattan" to close the album out. These last two sessions were recorded early in 1961, ...
