| | Moe Staiano Two Forms Of Multitudes: Conducted Improvisations CD (2003)
Rostropovich/Bernstein/Karajan - Rostropovich - Life & Art review
$18.89 Taking a cue from Lawrence "Butch" Morris, Moe! Staiano (he actually writes his first name with an exclamation point) conducts two 40-minute pieces on this album. Recorded on separate occasions, and with different troops, the two pieces share the same sets of prepared written notations and hand cues, but the results are quite different. Staiano approaches large ensemble "conduction" as both a way to sculpt shapes in masses of sounds, and as a way to stage melodic and rhythmical fragments. The two ensembles consist of musicians from the Bay Area. On "Piece No. 5", there is a hefty brass section, a mismatched string section (no cellos, but both double bass and electric bass), theremin, one drum set, and seven percussionists (including William Winant). For "Piece No. 4," the brass section shrinks considerably, a flute is added, the strings section is developed (now including cellos and five guitarists), piano, four drummers, four percussionists, and a singer. Well, Jesse Quattro is both a singer and screamer, active in the death metal group Saint Of Killers, and in the experimental/improv collective The Abstractions, together with guitarist Ernesto Diaz-Infante, cellist Bob Marsh, and sax player Rent Romus, all present for this session. At times the music sounds thoroughly prepared, at others it becomes very chaotic, but Staiano keeps things under control, and the music has a gripping drive that compensates for the lack of detail in sound quality (recording a 30-piece orchestra with little to no budget presents certain risks). Highlights are found in Part Three of "Piece No. 5," where a percussive locomotive propels a melody jumping around from instrument to instrument, while sustained brass clusters are being shaped, and in Part Four of "Piece No. 4," where Robert Silverman's theremin gets an unexpected feature spot backed by droning guitars. ~ François Couture
Long overdue groundbreaking experimental big band CD from Bay Area's leading and exciting composer/performer Moe! Staiano, also percussionist for Sleepy Time Guerrilla Museum, featuring two of his large scale conducted improvisations performed by ...
