Most of Byron Lee's output with his Dragonaires is smoothed out MOR-styled instrumental versions of various soca, reggae. and ska classics, the kind of thing tourists to Jamaica are likely to hear just off the boat, but as this carefully selected anthology shows, he could rise to the occasion when necessary and put aside his usual generic approach as a bandleader. Included here are some fine outings with Eric "Monty" Morris ("Oil in My Lamp," "Sammy Dead"), Mighty Sparrow ("Only a Fool," "Dragon Dance"), Toots & the Maytals (yet another version of "54 46 That's My Number"), and Keith Lyn ("Empty Chair"), as well as a moving and elegant bit of Jamaican ska doo wop from Stranger & Patsy called "Come Back" and a lovely, gentle take on Bob Marley's "Redemption Song." A bonus DVD featuring Lee & the Dragonaires in performance at the 2006 Air Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival is also included in the package, making this probably the best possible introduction to the high points of Lee's music. ~ Steve Leggett Byron Lee Essential Songs Essential Review

Essential album
$19.19 Functioning as something of a replacement for the 2001 collection Their Greatest Hits: The Record, The Ultimate Bee Gees covers much of the same ground as that double-disc set, albeit in not quite so linear a fashion. The Record marched through its 40 tracks chronologically, opening with the stately baroque Beatlesque pop of the '60s and then winding ...
| | Eminem Relapse CD (2009)
Essential CD music
$9.49 Lyrical acrobat Slim Shady returns after a five-year absence with his fifth major label release, continuing to strike the perfect balance between brooding insight and absolute silliness on 2009's RELAPSE. Opening single "Crack a Bottle" reunites Detroit's maddest rapper with his superstar mentor (Dr. Dre) and protege (50 Cent) on a fittingly funky tour de force.
Eminem's RELAPSE, a double album released after five years of recorded silence, a record featuring Dr. Dre behind the boards for the first time since 2000, faced no shortage of the relentless ...

| | Preacher's Wife CD (1996) Original Soundtrack
Essential songs
$9.59 THE PREACHER'S WIFE was nominated for a 1988 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "I Believe In You And Me" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
That renaissance gal is at it again. As in THE BODYGUARD, Whitney Houston does double duty as star and soundtrack provider for THE PREACHER'S WIFE. Don't look for her to be sticking to the commercial pop-R&B sound that served her so well on her last soundtrack album, though. THE PREACHER'S WIFE finds Houston reaching back to her roots in gospel, and collaborating with some stellar gospel artists, including her mother, Cissy.
Several cuts here, including "Hold On, Help Is On The Way" and "I Go To The Rock," find the soulful Georgia Mass Choir supporting Houston in her return to the fold. On "He's All Over Me," Houston is joined by gospel great Shirley Caesar as well. On a more modern tip, Houston delivers "Somebody Bigger Than You And I," accompanied by a veritable who's-who of contemporary R&B, including her husband, Bobby Brown, and Brown's New Edition bandmates Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant. THE PREACHER'S WIFE not only shows where Houston is headed, it proves ...
| | Chris Brown Graffiti CDs (2009) Deluxe Edition
Essential album
$14.37 Most of Graffiti is a natural progression for Chris Brown. Like many young cred-seeking male singers who have just exited their teenage years, Brown emphasizes womanizing and hedonism and balances it out with a couple clean and empty ballads, as well as a couple relatively lighthearted Europop numbers. A handful of songs deal with his relationship with Rihanna, as well as the fallout from his assault of her. ~ Andy Kellman

Essential album
$12.05 FOGGY MOUNTAIN BANJO (1961), one of Flatt and Scruggs's finest albums, was instrumental in turning on a new generation of bluegrass fans. (In addition to their success with Bill Monroe in the '40s and their solo successes in the '50s, Flatt and Scruggs contributed to the roots revival of the early-'60s). Even as their fan base expanded, however, Flatt and Scruggs continued to play the ...
