After a devastating string of full-lengths in the early 2000s culminating in the one-two punch of 2005's collaboration with Matt Sweeney, SUPERWOLF, and 2006's wrenching THE LETTING GO, Will Oldham seemed to be in a state of letting go himself. He re-energized his acting career with OLD JOY and a goofy appearance in a Kanye West video; wrote "His Hands," the title track to soul singer Candi Staton's comeback record; and backed up Tortoise on an odd album that featured-- among other throwaways--a cover of Springsteen's "Thunder Road." ASK FORGIVENESS, a mini-album of his own covers, finds Oldham back in fine form even as it chips away at his hard-earned gravitas.

Recorded on a lark in Philadelphia with members of the homegrown folkie outfit Espers, ASK FORGIVENESS finds Oldham lending his trademark warble to a diverse array of numbers. While Phil Ochs, Bjork, Thom Yorke, and Danzig are all given the Palace brother's spacious and shambolic indie-folk makeover here, the collection's stand-out is R. Kelly's "World's Greatest," within which Oldham discovers an earnest heart. While Cat Power--the other titan of millennial whisper-rock--beat Oldham to this concept with her own THE COVERS RECORD, ASK FORGIVENESS is every bit that record's equal and a welcome addition to Oldham's epic catalog. The Wire (p.53) - "Within its contemplative parameters, ASK FORGIVENESS is certainly a success....[With] Bonnie 'Prince' Billy returning once again to a meditative, troubadour persona..."
Q (Magazine) (p.92) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "With Oldham reinventing everything in his own backwoods way, the results are not so far in spirit from Johnny Cash's American Recordings."
Harp (magazine) - "[T]here's remarkable fluidity across this gorgeous set, which suggests that Oldham's versions of anyone else's songs are first and foremost his own."

Like 2003's MASTER AND EVERYONE, THE LETTING GO is a quiet, introspective record that examines the human heart, but the songs here equal or better those on its excellent predecessor. Oldham's insight into the politics of self and relationships is unflinching, and his wordplay--which balances surreal poetry ...

8 Mile: More Music From 8 Mile CD  (2002) Original Soundtrack

CD $12.65  4.6 stars Audio Samples
"Lose Yourself" won the 2004 Grammy Awards for Best Male Rap Solo Performance and for Best Rap Song. The song was also nominated for Record Of The Year, for Song Of The Year and for Best Song Written For A Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media. 8 MILE contains a 6 song bonus disc, THE SHADY AFTERMATH SAMPLER. Although the 8 MILE soundtrack links to a semi-autobiographical film featuring hip-hop bad-boy Eminem, the controversial rapper maintains a low profile on the CD. The man known as Marshall Mathers appears on a mere four tracks including "Love Me," an ominous-sounding collaboration with proteges Obie Trice and 50 Cent, who both appear with solo cuts of their own. 50 Cent's verbal skills have already landed him a joint Eminem/Dr. Dre label deal and earned him plenty of street cred thanks to the underground hit "Wanksta," which appears here along with the equally tasty "Places To Go." Other members of the Eminem/Dre axis who appear are D12 (a thumping "Rap Game") and Xzibit (the equally vicious "Spit Shine"). Also taking a turn on the soundtrack are Queens icon Nas ("U Wanna Be Me"), Brooklynite Jay-Z featuring Freeway ("8 Miles and Runnin'), and neo-soul free spirit Macy Gray ("Time Of My Life"). Not surprisingly, Eminem's jams prove to be the most potent and include the vitriolic "Rabbit Run," the insanely catchy title cut, and the smash jam "Lose Yourself." The bonus version of 8 MILE includes a bonus Enhanced CD featuring behind-the-scenes film footage, videos, freestyling, ...

Marty Wendell Rockabilly Heart CD  (2007)

CD $15.19
The MARTY WENDELL Story 2005 marked Marty Wendell's 40th year as a singer, songwriter, and recording artist. In 1965 he ventured into New York's Greenwich Village with his guitar and was discovered by a producer named Stanley Rowland who recorded him at A1 Studios in New York City. Marty grew up in Ticonderoga in upstate New York. As a child his favorite thing was an old Philco radio. Strongly influenced by the rockabilly artists on Sun Records from Memphis, TN he entered a church talent show. His first time singing in front of a live audience cemented his desire to sing and write songs. In his college years he began to do more performances and had the opportunity to meet a talent agent, Jerry Teifer, who worked out of the famous Brill Building in New York. Jerry was the first to introduce Marty to Johnny Cash. On the strength of the second release of his self-penned "Hey Hey Mama" on Ferus Records with Tom Wilde at the helm, Marty was booked to open for Cash in1968, the year that catapulted him to superstardom with his live album recorded at Folsom Prison. Marty's next release "An Ode To Burtis Dean" received national airplay and "Bring The Circus Back To Town" had international exposure courtesy of Armed Forces Radio. The last of his singles for Kee Records was a Carl Perkin's song, "Daddy Sang Bass". Perkins, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, cited Marty as "a good talent". Marty worked out of Washington, DC for three years being booked by the Claiborne Agency that handled mainly Rhythm & Blues acts such as Peaches & Herb and Maskman & The Agents. He also became friends with Ralph Rinzler, a founder of the Newport Folk Festival. Ralph also worked for the Smithsonian Institute on a project aimed at the preservation of roots music. He encouraged Marty to continue singing and writing original songs. In the 1970's Marty maintained a grueling schedule of club bookings and in 1977 he began hosting an annual music festival that continued for 20 years. His guests included former Statler Brother, Lew Dewitt, writer of the million selling "Flowers On The Wall". Marty became friends with Lew when he was on the Johnny Cash Show. Others included Warner Brother's hitmaker, Bandana, headed ...
