Jon Balke is a pianist from Norway whose music criss-crosses the genres of jazz, rock, and New Age. While he's performed and recorded with groups such as Magnetic North Orchestra and Oslo 13, BOOK OF VELOCITIES presents Balke alone, unplugged, and unedited. BOOK is practically just that, a collection of 19 short instrumental chapters, wherein Balke explores the entire piano, inside and out. But this album isn't merely a collection of vague or haphazard sounds. There is a logic guiding his vignettes, an abstract but very deliberate structure and plot to each note played. If one is in the mood for some challenging beauty on the 88's, Balke's BOOK is worth exploring.

Debut solo piano session by Norwegian pianist/composer, who's led the ECM projects Masqualero, Magnetic North Orchestra and Batagraf. Nineteen pieces, many of them beautiful miniatures that blend intricvate composition with improvisation.

Photographers: Christoph Egger; Colin Eick; Jon Balke.

Personnel: Jon Balke (piano).

Recording information: Radio Studio Drs, Zurich, Switzerland.

Nik Bartsch Holon CD  (2008)

Book Of Velocities CD music
CD $15.05  Top 500 Audio Samples
Pianist Nik Bärtsch's Zurich quintet Ronin has released a handful of recordings, but Holon is only the second released in the United States. When Stoa was issued in 2006, it was like this startling blast of air. Was it jazz? Was it minimalist classical music? Was it acoustic techno? Bärtsch calls it "zen funk." OK, fair enough, but in actuality, while it bears traces and borrows elements from all of the aforementioned genres, Ronin is its own animal, its own sound, its own complex yet utterly accessible musical identity or, better, brand. They have toured relentlessly all over the world, and as a result, this quintet is not only well seasoned, but also it has taken the music up the ladder a couple of rungs. Stoa revealed the taut, interlocking pulses, rhythms, and grooves, all stacked atop one another with nearly mathematical precision. Given the trance-like nature of some of it, it was easy to get hypnotized and allow its subtler elements, those having to do with improvisation, however tightly scripted, into the various sections of its numbered "moduls," as Bärtsch calls his compositions, as if they are all of a piece. The Ronin personnel have not undergone changes since Stoa: Sha, bass clarinets, alto saxophone; Andi Pupato, percussion; Kaspar Rast, drums; Björn Meyer, drums. Most of these players have been with Bärtsch since the beginning and as a unit have learned to trust one another to keep frames in this music while allowing for a certain looseness that makes it more physical, more driven, and consequently more intuitive and intimate: check the breakbeats and Bärtsch's solo on "Modul 41_17," where Sha moves the pulse by pitch ...

Bill Frisell History, Mystery CDs  (2008)

Book Of Velocities music CDs
CD $17.85  4 stars Audio Samples
Guitar maestro Bill Frisell outdoes himself in ambition and diversity on the two-disc HISTORY, MYSTERY. Performing with a rich string-laden octet, the artist threads together 30 tracks, some of which derive from his collaboration with cartoonist Jim Woodring entitled "Mysterio Sympatico," and others drawn from the music Frisell composed for the NPR series STORIES FROM THE HEART OF THE LAND. As always, Frisell's eclectic style freely blends genres together, mixing chamber music with free jazz, front porch Americana with high-minded atmospherics. Three covers-Thelonious Monk's "Jackie-ing," Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come," and Boubacar Traore's "Baba Drame"-complement Frisell's originals. By turns moody and celebratory, playful and soulful, challenging and eminently listenable, HISTORY, MYSTERY is another fine entry in this singular artist's excellent discography. Jon Hassell Last Night The Moon Came Dropping Its Clothes In The Street CD  (2009)

Book Of Velocities songs
CD $15.05  Audio Samples
Trumpeter/composer Jon Hassell has worked with innovators Brian Eno and La Monte Young, and he's immersed himself in the traditional musics of Africa and Asia; the result is a practically new genre. Call it electro-acoustic world music or fourth world, but Hassell's approach is both unique and influential. On first listen, LAST NIGHT THE MOON. is nothing startlingly different from his other discs, yet it's a beautiful refinement and expansion of his approach. All the usual suspects are present--Hassell's trumpet married to electronics (giving it an almost vocal tone); precise, echoing percussion; a hazy, sultry ambiance; and assorted instruments easing in and out of aural focus. But MOON consists of 10 relatively concise tracks, though many are quite lengthy (i.e., the title track, which clocks in at over 11 minutes). Also, the influence of the electric music of Miles Davis is slightly more pronounced (more in the way of tribute, not imitation)--at times, sections of MOON could be the more sensuous outtakes from Davis's BITCHES BREW. Liner Note Author: Jon Hassell . Recording information: Courtrais, Belgium; ...

Jacob Young Sideways CD  (2008)

Book Of Velocities album
CD $15.05  Top 500 Audio Samples
A thoroughly modern guitarist, Jacob Young (from Norway) was influenced chiefly by masters Jim Hall and John Abercrombie. Young's style is of the dense, mood-laden fusion variety particular to ECM Records. Recalling the earliest discs from that label by Bill Frisell and John Abercrombie, SIDEWAYS balances absorbing motifs, chilled-out textures, and flowing, probing solos. Trumpeter Mathias Eick evokes the mellow, cerebral styles of Miles Davis and Kenny Wheeler, and ECM vet drummer Jon Christensen is, as expected, perfect. Second ...

Marilyn Crispell Vignettes CD  (2008)

Book Of Velocities CD music
CD $15.05  5 stars Audio Samples
While it's true that this entire work feels like its own recital, out there alone on a wire with no net, there are aspects of the program of such stunning clarity and warmth that the listener is stirred by them, such as her reading of Arve Henricksen's "Stellweg," which is breathtaking and worth the price of the album all by itself, weaving together movement, drift, silence, and song as an expression of the heart. Crispell literally sings through her fingers on the piano. The mystery in her pastoral yet expansive "Once" is stretched in the more percussive and staccato-like presence of "Axis" that follows it, which is in turn underscored by "Vignette VI" and then a Pianist and composer Marilyn Crispell made her debut with ECM Records in 1997 with the stellar Nothing Ever Was, Anyway: The Music of Annette Peacock. Recorded with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Paul Motian, with a guest appearance by the subject herself on one track, it was the first of three trio recordings she made for the label. Amaryllis followed in 2001, with the same lineup, which was in turn followed by Storyteller, where Mark Helias replaced Peacock, and the program centered on tunes by Motian with a couple of her own compositions included as well. Vignettes marks Crispell's solo piano debut with the label and, after listening through a couple of times, one wonders what took her so long. The pianist ...

Long Picnic
Stephanie Rearick Long Picnic CD  (2000)

Book Of Velocities songs
CD $12.69
Stephanie Rearick is the pianist, main songwriter/singer/trumpeter, etc. for the Madison, WI circus rock spectacle The Coma Savants (formerly Your Mom SRO). Rearick also plays solo, a different matter entirely.Subtle and sensitive, The Long Picnic showcases more of Rearick's playing, including a few instrumental piano compositons. Dissonance and unusual harmonies, sometimes in layered vocal tracks, create new and interesting soundscapes. Literate lyrics are a bonus. The Long Picnic was recorded in Madison and Chicago using just acoustic piano and vocals to create a 10-song journey that is by turns playful, disturbing, and soothing.---"encompassing a panoply of pop, jazz, and, most notably, classical influences... Rearick's album The Long Picnic nicely captures her eclectic nature and formidable piano work." -- The Onion"This Madison singer-songwriter has sharper instrumental skills than most... she's not afraid to shut up and play an instrumental. Her writing also displays a grim loopiness she'd do well to cultivate, and on 'Not Another Minute' she sounds like the love chiled of Tori Amos and Robyn Hitchcock." -- Chicago Reader It is a tough toss calling this a rock album; if labels were horseshoes, no winning points would result in making such a distinction. Stephanie Rearick is part of the Madison, WI, music scene and her activities might be lumped in with all other manner of indie rock from a college town predictably full of such bands. But this debut album under her own name is a solo piano affair, featuring both instrumentals and vocals. While it is certainly possible to rock out on piano, even without a band, there is really very little of that going on here -- in fact, close to zilch. This is a dreamy, contemplative collection of mostly ballads, all of the material original except for covers of Béla Bartók and Alex Chilton. Even just on paper, this latter repertoire decision indicates great versatility and a wide range of musical interests on behalf of this performer. Her lyrics are also worth a mental probe, although like much material of this sort, it inspires less as printed text then as a vehicle for her expansive, at times eccentric singing style. "Not Another Minute" is about the liveliest song of the bunch, its lyrics blending bad taste with sardonic humor in a manner that shows Rearick's great potential as a songwriter. "The Man Who Stole Tomorrow" and "Wading" are more typical of her material: melancholy, rubato, and vague. The material on this recording, and Rearick's solo performing in general, seems like it would communicate with much more power in a live setting, where listeners would be able to watch her at work on the piano, an instrument she obviously loves deeply. No complaint can be made about the skill with which the sound of this instrument is recorded on this production, however. Two different pianos were used; some of the tracks were created on her house piano, while others originate from a recording studio's 1928 grand piano. Her instrumental pieces provide a welcome balance to the vocal material, especially the Bartók. Indeed, it would be wise for her to continue including ...

Hypertonics Asbestos CD  (2002)

Book Of Velocities album
CD $5.69
"The Hypertonics exist. 'Great. So do thousands of other bands. But none of those bands seems to have the energy or the intellect to conceive of and execute such a rigorous and downright enviable self-promotional campaign. Their posters - huge 11x17 jobs, often one right on top of another - brag about their "Proletarian Bass," "Cabaret Guitars" and "Dishpan Vocals"; they are "Relevant," "First-Generation," and "Difficult." But I want to be relevant, first-generation and difficult, too. . . . '"The whole idea of the posters,' explains Brian Lord, who sings and plays guitar, "is that if I can't quite say it in the songs, I'll say it in the posters. It's about building a new vocabulary, and beginning to talk and think about music in different ways. So we do that by using words you don't usually hear in the context of rock and roll. Like: "What kind of band are you?" "We're a nutritious band." And what the fuck does that mean? Well, a bunch of things. And it means that we want to challenge the culture to get better, and we want to help it develop." '"If there's one thing we can do, it's put a few words together in an interesting and provocative way," adds Mike Rogers, of the proletarian bass. "But if it's going to be on the edge, it has to be high-volume. It has to be a spectacle - but we don't have the resources to create a spectacle. So we do our best, but there are still problems. Everyone thinks we're 'the HyperTRONics.' Brian met Joe Strummer and gave him a copy of our CD, and he said, 'The Hypertronics,' what a good name for a band." '"Hyper," anyway, is right on target. Mike and Brian pull no punches in their live show, swirling pop and punk and good ...

"When Jay Filippone plucks the right lyric and the right melody out of the air and John Spokus and Pete Kuhn put the right beat under it, they do more than just ape the classic guitar-pop canon; they add to it." - (March 1999; Baltimore City Paper)"This album slaps you in the face pretty early on and for the most part the sting never really fades." - (Liner Notes; June 1999)"The accelerating thrust is aimed squarely at the chorus, where the payoff is an irresistibly catchy pop-rock melody. Book Of Velocities songs

The girl and boy met in the green deserts of the West where they had ended their respective pilgrimages from far away lands; the girl from the hot, dry regions of the South, and the boy from the cold, unfriendly Northern territories. Each had come in search of fame, fortune, and enlightenment; what they found was each other. They first met on a fateful winter's day, both of them independently and immediately understanding that in their musical union was the promise of powerful magic. So they settled there on the westernmost rim, took up their instruments, created their melodies, and began their adventure.Years passed, and the boy and girl found family and friends in that place. They conferred with other artisans, some who had traveled far like our heroes, some born of the deserts; all who strived to bring beautiful music to the hearts of the green land's inhabitants. Many allegiances were created and broken during this time, and with the passing of each, the initial union of the girl and boy seemed to grow stronger.More years flowed past them, and by and by, they found themselves again to be independent in their musical endeavors. They were happy then, because they were still surrounded by friends, and their creations were growing in strength and beauty. But time soon became their enemy, and they were sedated by the sweet wine of Comfort and Security. It was as if a spell had been cast on the boy and girl, clouding their collective vision with mundane worries about taxes and jobs, matching curtains and couch covers, and 401K contributions. As the grey shroud deepened, they began to forget why they had come to the desert, and they grew fat and content in their average lives. But deep down, they knew that something was amiss, and their creations became darker and more bittersweet as each moon rose. One day, as the girl strummed her guitar and chirped half-hearted notes into the brittle air, the boy approached her with a question. "Do you think it's time to leave this place?" he asked. "Not yet", she replied, "but it is coming. And we must prepare." She looked up from the frets and the hint of a smile crossed her lips. They made preparations in secret, looking towards the day they would depart and begin their Noble Quest. They worked hard to create new records of their work, as the previous annals had become tragically outdated. Day in and day out they slaved away in pursuit of perfection, placing each note with great delicacy as to evoke intense emotion in the awestruck ears of their followers. The girl and boy remain in the desert, but with each passing hour the time of their departure draws nearer. Under the cloak of night they crunch numbers and create budgets, study the logistics of travel, gather contacts, and share the fruits of their labor in smoky back alleyways to sate the appetites of their loyal followers.Though they have smitten down a multitude of fearsome beasts and conquered ...
