| | Longshots Hunger Music CD (2005)
This Madness Called Love
$14.79 Hip-Hop has now entered its Crack age. Twenty years after the crack epidemic entered America's inner-cities, after-the-fact lyrical hustlers push shrink-wrapped and barcoded audiodope through the airwaves to millions of fan-addicts who seek the next Hip-Hop hit. Prostitutes walk the strip, mic in hand, whispering sweet nothings to excited heads, in hope of pulling the last dollar from their hands. Beats are made in assembly line fashion, with downloaded computer software, by those eager to satisfy record exec's insatiable appetite for commercial hits. It seems Hip-Hop has taken a turn for the worse, and maybe its final downfall. But there is a resistance. A small community of diehard heads who carry the torch for the giants of yesteryear. Producers who still use mpc's over mp3's and dig crates for the most obscure samples in order to create masterpieces through sonic alchemy. Lyricists, who still scribble inside the margins of marble notebooks and sharpen their pens to master all styles, from rocking a party to creating a thought-provoking record able to inspire the most downtrodden of man. At the forefront of this burgeoning rap renaissance are two rhyme warriors, forming a unit to launch the first stone at the corporate Goliath. Their name: The Longshots. The stone: ...
| | Eddy Toucan Mango Pie CD (2003)
This Madness Called Love
$14.79 Toucan Eddy had its unlikely but "fateful" beginning when two singer/songwriters met in Arizona in July 1974. Bert Campbell, from Atlanta, had just graduated from NAU in Flagstaff. Thomas Waterfield, the son of movie actress Jane Russell and LA Rams quarterback Bob Waterfield, decided to leave the "Hollywood scene" and move to the peace and quiet of the Arizona high desert. The two met one afternoon on the Campbell ranch "fixing fence" and found they had a common shared interest in music. They got together and jammed for a few months before forming a band playing cover tunes and originals.Bert grew up listening to all the "soul groups" of the 60's and later influences included the Young Rascals, Santana, the Allman Brothers and the Beatles. Tom, a west coast boy, got most of his influences from groups like Crosby, Stills and Nash, Neil Young, the Stones, the Beach Boys and also the Beatles. Having very different vocal styles, Bert and Tom strangely discovered they had an almost "brother harmony" sound when they sang together. This blend has been a trademark of their music ever since. The CD "Mango Pie" took 4 years to record and displays an interesting mix of funky rhythms, love ballads and a touch of smooth jazz without sounding like "elavator music". Some have also likened it to the playfulness of Jimmy Buffet on the cut "I Like Spicy Women". The song "She's Never Been To Colorado" is in the country-rock vein just to throw you a curve ball. ...
| | Frank Rose This Is Now That Was Then CD (2005)
This Madness Called Love
$12.15 Country singer-songwriter Frank Rose has recently wrapped up recording his second full length album entitled "this is now that was then." "We got the best of the best on this record," Rose said, referring to the musicians who recorded with him. Four of the band members are well known for playing with Dwight Yokam, including the producer of "this is now that was then," Al Bonhomme. "Al has put together some of the finest musicians in country music today," Frank went on to explain. "Our fiddle player, Larry Franklin plays with Alan Jackson and Shania Twain. John Molo, the drummer, plays with Phil Lesh and Winona. Even our horn player is huge!" Trumpeter Lee Thornburg is well known for playing with the Tower of Power and on Jay Leno's Tonight Show. Frank penned nine of the twelve tracks on the album, chosing one song from Nashville writer Stanley T, a song from former bandmates in Arizona, while a cover of rock band Poison's 1988 hit "Every Rose Has It's Thorn" rounds out the record. The first video, currently in production in LA, will be for "Tennessee Rain." "We actually let the director pick the song," Frank said, referring to Dermott Downs, who last year was nominated for Video of the Year at the County Music Awards. Downs has a long list of Directing and Cinamatography credits including the hit TV show "CSI." "Just like the musicians on the CD, we pulled no punches and went for the best of the best in recruiting Dermott to shoot our video," Frank said. "The album will ...
| | John Michael Hersey Whirligig CD (2002)
This Madness Called Love
$15.19 With New York City based singer-songwriter Hersey's latest effort Whirligig, we see a greater emphasis on Modern Rock styles in the Elvis Costello/Joe Jackson mode, and less of a reliance on the Roots Rock or Americana of his previous CD, Soup Du Jour. This is not to say that Hersey and band have forsaken their Country, Blues and Rockabilly influences, which always seem to be lurking beneath the surface. It just that, on this recording at least, the musical past is subservient to a more modern pop rock sensibility. However, lest the use of the word “pop” conjure images of N-Sync dancing in your head, one sampling of the lyrics of the song “Don't Trust Me” from Whirligig should dispel any notion of an attempt at pandering to the post-adolescent crowd:Mr. Programmer/VultureIs cultivating cultureFor couch-potatoes to get offLeading me to temptationAnd my assimilationI'm trying hard not to get softMy mind is dirty Someone should bust meI'm over thirtyDon't trust meThis is rock music for grown-ups of all ages (and their inner children); for those whose concerns have gone ...
