As any quick perusal of old Top 40 rock & roll station playlists will attest, singles were where the shakin' action was, as rock & roll albums were scarce as hen's teeth back in those pre-Beatle days. But when the record companies decided to issue one, it was usually an artifact of high rockin' value and some major influence. Naysayers to the contrary, this debut album by the Northwest's first great rock & roll combo is just such an artifact. The Wailers dispensed crude, greasy, largely instrumental rock & roll music for those who came to shake it up and shake it down, and it's all on fine, rhythmic, open display here. This album is amazing in its own simplistic, nuthin'-special way, its crudity almost palpable. There's only one vocal aboard, Kent Morrill's "Dirty Robber," later covered and torched by the Sonics. Everything else is built on the riff-sturdy bones of their biggest hit, "Tall Cool One." With two guitars, piano, sax, and drums -- no bass player anywhere on here, another crudeness indicator of the times and locale it was recorded in -- all blasting away like they're working a VFW Hall dance, hoof shakers like "Wailin'," "Shanghaied," "Beat Guitar" (featured in the soundtrack of the misguided Jerry Lee Lewis bioflick Great Balls Of Fire), and "Gunnin' For Peter" stand loud and proud as teen hall pre-Beatle rock & roll at its finest. Not to be confused with the French death metal band who debuted with 2000s Cut Your Flesh and Worship Satan, this Antaeus is a Greek-born, New York-based DJ and producer who -- as the album title suggests -- specializes in a brand of world fusion electronica heavily influenced by the music of his homeland. Unfortunately, the resulting blend of bouzouki and ambient techno does no particular favors for either style of music; rather than integrating the two forms, too much of Byzantine Meditation simply sounds like Antaeus is playing an old Nonesuch Explorer compilation of Greek music over backbeats. This lack of imagination, combined with a seeming lack of ideas (the title track appears in four not-very-different mixes, and "Kyrie" in three, together accounting for over half of the album's 65-minute running time), makes the album's occasional bright spots, like the skittering stop-start rhythms of "Delfic Gong Seven," stand out that much more, but it does overall make for a pretty dreary listen. ~ Stewart Mason
Fans of ENIGMA, ENYA, and ART OF NOISE will appreciate Antaeus' fusion of wordless vocalization, traditional instruments, and electronic wizardry. His intoxicating melange of the spiritual with downtempo and drum 'n' bass grooves adds color and space to music. "Byzantine Meditation" has been variously described as "chill-out music" and "music for body and soul." The title track was used in Jacob's Coffee TV commercials. The same song and the track "Kyrie" have been used on several chill compilations released worldwide. They have also received significant airplay.
