After establishing herself on the 2007 Matador-released album THE GREATEST as the indie world's answer to Norah Jones, Cat Power's Chan Marshall returned to the format of 2000's THE COVERS ALBUM for JUKEBOX, tackling tracks made famous by Hank Williams ("Ramblin' (Wo)man"), Bob Dylan ("I Believe in You"), James Brown ("Lost Someone"), and Frank Sinatra ("New York"), among many others. Marshall proved herself a unique interpreter on THE COVERS ALBUM, deftly folding a diverse set of songs into her own dark, dreamy sonic world. She expertly stays the course on JUKEBOX, sublimating the masculine bravado of songs by these artists into her own muscular yet decidedly feminine musical template.

JUKEBOX contains only one new Cat Power composition ("Song to Bobby"), but the many facets of Marshall are on full display here. And though the soul influence of THE GREATEST appears only fleetingly, it makes for what is perhaps the album's best performance, "Woman Left Lonely," a song written by Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham and made famous by Janis Joplin. The track finds Marshall offering her audience, as she did on THE GREATEST, a glimpse of her raw vulnerability stripped bare of any arty concessions to the tortured psyche by which she defined herself for so many years.

Cat Power: Chan Marshall (vocals); Judah Bauer (guitar); Gregg Foreman (piano); Erik Paparazzi (bass guitar); Jim White (drums).

Additional personnel: Mabon "Teenie" Hodges, Matt Sweeney (guitar); Dylan Willemsa (viola); Spooner Oldham (organ); Larry McDonald (percussion).

Rolling Stone (p.62) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "She refashions material from other artists and makes it seem like it's been hers all along."
Spin (p.p.95) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "She's unafraid to be unfaithful and that's JUKEBOX's greatest strength....With Dylan acting as a bridge between the covers and her originals, Marshall finds intriguing new shadows to stalk."
Entertainment Weekly (p.70) - "Best of all is Marshall's redo of her own 'Metal Heart,' a hushed fugue from '98 that's been spurred into full bloom as a fiery rocker." -- Grade: B+
Uncut (p.80) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he music does get swampy and dark, but the atavistic urgings of the group are held in check by the gentle clarity of Marshall's voice."
Alternative Press (p.114) - 3 stars out of 5 -- JUKEBOX begins to mesmerize when Billie Holiday's 'Don't Explain' gets a Spartan, darklands-country overhaul, and Joni Mitchell's 'Blue' seems beamed in from a Holiday Inn lounge run by David Lynch."
No Depression (p.71) - "Marshall has an extraordinary voice....JUKEBOX is comprised of vast, arid patches of affect broken up by occasional tiny outbursts of emotion."
Q (Magazine) (p.91) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[H]er most polished record to date....It still catches the light and the imagination."
Blender (Magazine) (p.96) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Marshall works subtly. She revels in sly, unexpected phrasing, flickers in an out of hope like a candle and turns meanings inside out with a single, haunting phrase..."
Harp (magazine) (pp.91-92) - "[S]he's accompanied throughout JUKEBOX by her stellar Dirty Delta Blues touring band..."
Clash (magazine) (p.107) - "'Song To Bobby' is a touching reflection on the writers who have changed her life, a suitable tribute from one major talent to another."
Record Collector (magazine) (p.87) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Amusingly, she opens with a self-referential take on the ultimate cover, 'New York, New York,' which, almost incredibly, finds new life in the tired old words."

This CD contains B.B. King's first ABC-Paramount studio efforts -- Mr. Blues (1962) and Confessin' the Blues (1965), respectively. While there are inevitable similarities between the projects, offering them back-to-back allows listeners an acute sense of King's rapid maturation and development during what was by all accounts the nexus of the guitarist/vocalist's career. The dozen-song Mr. Blues was a haphazard start for King with the contents taken from three different recording sessions in a 13-month period (March 1, 1962 through April 11, 1963). Based on the results, ...
Good To Be Alive
Evelyn Forever Good To Be Alive CD  (2001)

Jukebox music CDs
CD $12.69  Audio Samples
By the end of the '90s, the power pop genre had become so classicist and insular as to be uncommercial, with the notable exception of a group of punky, geek rock outfits. Evelyn Forever's sound falls squarely into this group; while they're notably indie, their sound would play particularly well on mainstream modern rock radio. The inevitable comparison would be to say they're kind of the Weezer of the Jersey shore, but there are notable differences. For one, Evelyn Forever's hooks and background vocals are pushed way into the foreground, creating a sugary-sweet (and significantly more crisp) sound fitting for a pop record. The band also doesn't shy away from being emotional and almost cheesy at times. These are important distinctions, as they mark Good to Be Alive as very much a power pop record. A true guitar pop fan will recognize the hooks, perfectly fuzzy guitars, and gooey background vocals, and they won't be put off by the fact that a song like "Indecision" almost sounds like it could be by a boy band. Many of these attributes (and the fact that the band's outlook couldn't be much sunnier) are also probably why they haven't moved beyond cult success, but the rabid pop fans wouldn't want it any other way. ~ Jason Damas Good to Be Alive is Evelyn Forever's third, and finest, effort to date. They have skillfully succeeded in capturing the dynamics that have made them one of the premeir up-and-coming power pop bands out there: driving, powerful guitars, energy, beautiful melodies and impeccable harmonies. With four talented singer/songwriters, there is something for everyone, from the punk sensibilities of such tracks as "Drunk Tank" and "Champagne" to the more traditional bouncy power pop of "Imagine My Surprise". This album also features the band delving into more unusual genres (at least for them). On "Indecision", the band explores drum loops and hip-hop beats beneath an undeniably catchy classic melody. "Little Girl" finds the band expertly mastering a sort of psychodelic pop. And the title track is as good of an arena rock power ballad that ever was. Fans of classic power pop/true rock and roll will not be disappointed.

06/01/08: Progressive folk rock outfit OHO releases their first CD/DVD since 2003's critically acclaimed "UP" CD. "Bricolage" is a 2 disc set: one 20 song 78+ minute music CD (13 brand spanking new songs and 7 bonus tracks, 3 of which have never before been released) accompanied by a 55+ minute DVD (12 videos interspersed with interview footage, a photo gallery, and a "special features" link where one can find the CD lyrics & credits as well as the DVD song lyrics) and all this in an imaginative digi-package (graphics and DVD post production by Bennett Davis) sporting the colorful illustrations of Baltimore-based artist, Connell P. Byrne, a chalk pastel by former OHO vocalist, Grace Hearn, and the photography of Jon Considine.

The DVD anthology documents the performance years of 1988-1992 with video footage of the band's appearance opening for Cheap Trick at the Universal Amphitheater in Hollywood, CA, their Star Search audition video, the band's 1990 WAMA performance, 3 scripted promotional videos (w/upgraded audio), an intimate acoustic performance for the 2nd English Lutheran Day Care pre-schoolers, and 3 live selections from ...
