The first full-length duet album by rapper Bow Wow and R&B singer Omarion, FACE OFF sounds more like a pair of buddies having fun and experimenting in the studio than a major album by either party, and that is a huge part of its charm. At a time when too many hip-hop albums take themselves far too seriously (call it the P. Diddy effect), 2007's FACE OFF harks back to the casual, lighthearted spirit of hip-hop's past. Highlights include "Girlfriend," the sly "Can't Get Tired of Me" and "Take Off Your Clothes," as well as the T-Pain-produced first single "He Ain't Gotta Know." FACE OFF was also released in a two-disc limited edition set that included a bonus DVD.
The Deluxe Fan Edition Brilliant Box of Bow Wow & Omarion's Face-Off features a 40 minute bonus DVD which includes behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the album and a video mix with 4 videos from 'Wanted' and 'O'. This was actually a decent cd. Bow Wow actually tried to step up his lyrical game. On top of that he cussin. When I heard that I was like WOW. This cd is good, not great. Still a little kiddish but I'm sure their work on their game.

While male rappers like the Notorious B.I.G. and Snoop Doggy Dogg are praised for kickin' that hard-core hip-hop and keepin' it real, female MCs who talk dirty or otherwise try to represent from that same lifestyle are usually criticized for it. Animations Underhill Jazz, 2003Listening to Animations, the aptly named guitar duo effort of John Abercrombie and John Basile, I get the sense that I've wandered into a home where a couple of jazz guitar masters are holding some kind of private, impromptu session. While my presence may be acknowledged, and even welcomed, I know that this event is hardly for my benefit. And that's a lucky thing for me, because I've been permitted to listen in on a fascinating and intimate sonic conversation between friends. Animations begins with the sprightly performed standard, "Sweet and Lovely." This auspicious introduction does not betray the listener later on, but the happy conventions do end with it -- giving way to ever deeper, bluer grooves that surprise and delight as much as they evoke and impress upon. In "Nobody Else But Me," we first approach Basile's whimsical, fluent soloing, his lines asserting themselves with varying intensity while Abercrombie enters with pointed and more articulated runs. Where Basile tends toward the understated, Abercrombie opts for more salient soundings. These sensibilities meld nicely on the spacey, bittersweet "Angel Falls," a beautiful original ballad that evokes a kind of aural deja vu. Horace Silver's "Peace" follows and I'm treated once again to a tune that is familiar and yet somehow, created anew. Clearly this is a work of two people with genuine mutual artistic respect and understanding. While such familiarity among collaborating musicians is expected, the degree to which Basile and Abercrombie can interact through improvisation -- and without ever dueling -- is not. We feel the harmonic tension build and wane throughout Animations, yet there is never the slightest hint of any note whose aim is to rebut or confront.
