Vocalist Lizz Wright mixes jazz, gospel, and soul on THE ORCHARD, an intimate, intensely personal album that ranks among the most compelling of the artist's career. With help from singer-songwriter Toshi Reagon, Marc Anthony Thompson (who records under the name Chocolate Genius), and members of Ollabelle, Calexico, and Bob Dylan's band, Wright has created a beautiful, organic feel on THE ORCHARD--one that is the perfect vehicle for her expressive voice and original songwriting vision. Yet it is Wright herself that shines through most powerfully here, whether on stunning originals such as "When I Fall" or her treatments of Ike and Tina's "I Idolize You" or Led Zeppelin's "Thank You."

Uncut (p.113) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Her take on Patsy Cline's 'Strange' shimmers with loss and longing, while taking a shot at Led Zep's 'Thank You' is inspired as it is bold." Down Beat (p.75) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[Wright] pulls off the trick of sounding self-possessed even when she's vulnerable, as on the heartbeat-bass driven 'My Heart' and the ticking, slow backbeat of 'When I Fall'..." No Depression (p.72) - "[A] thoroughly modern yet classically constructed album of love songs." Mojo (Publisher) (p.114) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[The] uncluttered production and skeletal, organic arrangements allow Wright's voice to shine on haunting tunes like 'Speak Your Heart'..." Lizz Wright Orchard Songs Orchard Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) Wright Smolders "Going Home" I must admit, I had to wait to comment on Lizz Wright’s considerably warm pipes. I have been disappointed with so many young artists who either forsake all originality for the quick buck. I listened to her first CD, the Jazz-Pop oriented Salt, and then the ethereal Dreaming Wide Awake. Now that she has released The Orchard, I cannot hold my tongue any longer.
Wright is unquestionably one of the most original and sincere young artists to arrive on the music scene in the last three decades. The Orchard finds Wright again produced by Craig Street who has an uncanny ability to get vocalists to dig deep into their own psyches. Wright’s smoky vocals blend folk, country, soul into what sounds and smells like her (and my) native Georgia. This time out, however, Wright co-wrote 8 of the 12 tracks on this CD. Her most frequent compositional partner is the underrated Toshi Reagon (daughter of Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon, noted historian, vocalist and founder of Sweet Honey ‘N the Rock). Wright
The opening track, a Wright/T. Reagon composition “Coming Home” has a gospel/anthem quality. "Leave Me Standing Alone" is a decidedly funky uptempo plea. Yet Wright does best when she shows off her considerable interpretive skills on the old Ike & Tina Turner chestnut “I Idolize You.” Her reading of Patsy Cline’s classic mid-tempo “Strange” is slowed here and turned into a languid and haunting torch song.
But buyer beware. This is not Soul music; it is not Folk; it is not Jazz; it is not Blues; and it is not Country. But it contains components of all of the above. It reminds the listener of the hybrid that is Southern music, and Georgia music in particular. I can smell the Georgia pines and feel the red clay between my toes with each listen.
All of Wright’s albums tend to become more impressive and more enjoyable with each listen. The Orchard continues that tradition. Wright’s deep and serene introspection may not appeal to all listeners. She almost requires that the listener bring something of him/herself to the table. But if you hang around awhile, you will not be disappointed.

Smooth, vocals once again Liz Wright presents another smooth laid back vocal style. Never one to push her vocal range that you know she has. Sit back with a whisky on a late evening & chill out to the music.
This is an album that will grow on you with successive listenings. Unlike a lot of todays music, this is very well recorded.

$17.75 Being true to one's self in today's music business can be a challenge for any musician. It is unusual when two guitarists can connect and not have to compromise the music they love. It is fortunate for Paul, Bert and listeners alike that they are traveling along the same road, "The Road That Sings To Me" which happens to be the latest CD released by these two artists. The music on this CD is an assortment of standards, bossas and originals recorded on a variety of acoustic guitars. The guitar duo format creates a feeling of intimacy with the listeners, since both players are always exposed in either the soloist or accompanist role. The opening track Estate has a rhythmic Latin feel while the melody is rich with emotion. The solos are very lyrical as they are throughout the album. I Thought About You shows some clever interplay between Paul and Bert when they exchange 4's, 2's, 1's and finally interweave to get back into the melody. Recado Bossa Nova is an upbeat version of the Djalma Ferreira tune that was recorded on two very different sounding nylon string guitars. Duke Ellington's Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me has a bluesy feel that is played using harmonized bass lines giving the tune a toe tapping groove. This album also showcases each player as a solo artist; Bert playing Shades of Autumn and Emily by himself and Paul playing solo on Blue In Green and his original Forgiveness. Also featured on this CD are four other originals that highlight the compositional ...
