| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Greatest Hits CD music
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than ...
| | Brad Paisley American Saturday Night CD (2009)
Greatest Hits music CDs
$12.19 An American saturday night is not an unusual topic for a country song but Brad Paisley's celebration is. Paisley sees a typical weekend night as a cultural collision of French kisses, Italian Ices, Canadian bacon and margaritas, a place where Mexican and Dutch beers chill side by side in a bucket of ice. If he leans too heavily on labels, referring to those beers by brand name, it's merely a reflection of Paisley's uncanny knack for capturing the casual contemporary details of American life at the tail end of the 2000s. It's not just the pile up of iPhones and international video chats on "Welcome to the Future," the first country anthem of the Obama era, it's how he'll pick up prescription for his girl and flips macho stereotypes on their head on "The Pants." He's a thoroughly modern man and that attitude helps invigorate his traditional ...
| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Greatest Hits songs
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of her father's passions, only now, they've become his daughter's treasures, as well. It's an affirming story, but that's all it would be if Cash didn't sing her heart out here. The opener, a version ...
| | Them Crooked Vultures CD (2009)
Greatest Hits album
$11.19 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. ...

| | Mike Beck Whatever You Want CD (2005)
Greatest Hits songs
$16.45 Since arriving in New York City in 2002, Mike Beck has become a favorite on the singer/songwriter scene. After having studied jazz piano performance at McGill University, later graduating from Berklee College of Music, and performing in a vast array of projects all throughout the northeast, the 26-year-old from Boston finally felt ready to step into the spotlight. And that's just what he has done, using his unique brand of smart yet catchy song-writing and dynamic stage presence to win over fans one show at a time. It's "pop with a brain" as Mike likes to call it, and one listen to his current independent full-length release "Whatever You Want" makes this description crystal clear. The music is accessible, well-crafted acoustic rock, but upon closer scrutiny, one discovers many subtle layers of advanced harmony and sonic texture. Mike's sound has been described as Ben Folds or Aimee Mann visiting the aural landscape of Sarah McLachlan or Wilco. Lyrically, he is always honest and ...
| | Martine Locke On The Verge CD (2005)
Greatest Hits album
$18.99 Elvis has Colonel Tom Parker, the Beatles had Brian Epstein. Martine Locke has.....well, Martine Locke. This Australian singer/songwriter/guitarist is a one-woman operation: publicist, manager, booking agent, record label owner, visionary, producer and artist.Dividing her time between the US and Australia, Martine has toured with Ani DiFranco and rocked the stage with The Cowboy Junkies, Arlo Guthrie and Luka Bloom. In a scene that is packed with unoriginal four chord flops, Martine reaches well outside with a more independent, passionate perspective on music. Her music is "so powerful that itdemands attention". And while the Ani comparison is there, she also shares vocal qualities with Melissa Etheridge or the Indigo Girls.Musically she travels far in the folk-rock world. Some tunes will remind you of Counting Crows and others will bring in that Alanis Morissette association, with a sting of Carol King sneaking in here and there. She also applies do-it-yourself ethics with all the work she churns out. Her first solo album, released in 1994, was completely self produced and sold over 8,000 copies in her native country - an impressive hurdle for a solo musician on any island. In 1996 Martine started a highly respected acoustic duo called The Velvet Janes. They released four albums onMartine's record label 'Passionfruit Produce, which have sold more than 80,000 copies to date. 2003 saw Martine releasing her second ...
