Not wishing to displease her father, but incapable of giving up her true passion, Ariel attends secret concerts, carefully eluding the wicked and watchful Marina Del Rey (voiced by Academy Award winner Sally Field.) Together with her friends Sebastian (Samuel E. Wright) and Flounder (Parker Goris), the young mermaid must find a way to convince her father to reverse his ban, before the heart and soul of the kingdom wither forever.
Featuring the return of original voice cast members, ARIEL'S BEGINNING offers an amazing new set of songs from Broadway composer Jeanine Tesori, and a rich score from James Dooley. Little Mermaid - Ariel's Beginning Movie Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars)   Uninspired and boring...
What Disney is thinking of when they put together something like "Ariel's Beginning" is a mystery. Not up to par with the beautiful "The Little Mermaid", which of course is to be expected since it was made for DVD, "Ariel's Beginning" is not really a beginning at all, but rather a silly, predictable, and cliched forgettable film. This is definitely only for little kids who would never know the difference between it the endearing classic. And boy, were they off when they stated on the back of the DVD that it was "teeming with surprises, breathtaking animation, and all-new songs"! NOT!!! Everything in this picture was taken from somewhere else, and the animation is only "breathtaking" when compared to the "Little Mermaid" TV series. (which, by the way, is far better than this film) While "Little Mermaid" felt like a classic that could fit into any era, AB gives a viewer a modern day feel to it, with the outdated jokes and overused slang. And although they used Jodi Benson (original voice of Ariel)it's been twenty years since the classic so hence her voice is bound to change and it did! While her singing was lovely back then, it is off-key now. (not that many would notice the difference anymore) I found myself cringing from time to time with the high notes. It seems like the only unique ideas that Disney owns today is Pixar. Stick with those, and have your kids watch the classics while teaching them that there IS a difference between excellent and "well, I'm glad that's over". Just because it's Disney does not mean it's good. The only thing that could be worse is the play(shudder!).

 Great Prequel
I like the animation but the plot wasn't that great and Marina Del Ray wasn't a great villian either. Morgana from The Little Mermaid II was way much better villian than Marina Del Ray. I still enjoy the movie and some of the song but I prefer The Little Mermaid II because it has a much better plot and the songs are great.

this one doesn't have the same vibe as the very first one...i can't say i enjoyed watching it as much i did the first...so 3 stars for me...but hey,it's a DISNEY so it's not all lost...
