We became The Champagne when we realized it wasn't working. The posturing, the pretending, the sunglasses. We were a rock band, and we were trying so hard to be cool, and people weren't buying it at all, and when we finally stopped denying what was happening, we retreated into our rehearsal space and became The Champagne. Because people aren't stupid; they know a farce when they see one, and four not-so-young guys from Long Island playing guitar rock in New York City in 2003, hoping to break into a scene that was already saturated with budding rock stars: that's farcical.One of those four guys, maybe sensing the inevitable, simply left. So it was the three of us, in a rented basement, and we had failed. What does a rock band do when it fails? Just stop? Stop making music; that didn't sound too good, but after all, the people had spoken, right? This wasn't even our first band; we had played together in another band already, and all of us had been in other bands before that; hell, we were getting old! But wait, why were we doing this in the first place? Why had all of us been doing this for all these years? To be cool? To be hip? To pretend we're still young?
