| | Enigma LSD: Love Sensuality Devotion, The Greatest Hits CD (2001)
Chemical Imbalance CD music
$11.45 Among the many artists that helped inject a pan-global flavor into American pop music is Enigma (A.K.A. Michael Cretu), a German artist who brought the sound of chanting Gregorian monks to the charts with "Sadeness (Part I)," a breakout smash from Enigma's 1990 debut MCMXC a.d. The collection LOVESENSUALITYDEVOTION rounds out the rest of the '90s for Enigma with plenty of undulating rhythms and world music hybrids.
Dance beats are strung throughout this compilation and pop up on everything from the high-flying ambiance of "T.N.T. For The Brain" to the industrial clang of "Push the Limits" and the chugging "Modern Crusaders." One of Enigma's charms is the way the most unlikely elements find their way into the songs. A murmuring children's choir lightly breaks through the Asian-flavored "Cross Of Changes," the chant from a South American Indian gives the swirling "Return To Innocence" its distinctive character, and the whispered French and uttering of the title by Cretu's wife Sandra lends "Mea Culpa" a sensual edge. LOVESENSUALITYDEVOTION ...
| | Lemon Jelly Lost Horizons CD (2002)
Chemical Imbalance music CDs
$14.49 British ambient duo Lemon Jelly debuted in a big way with the successful LEMONJELLY.KY, but as that was really a collection of their early EPs, LOST HORIZONS is their proper debut album. As such, it's a fully formed sonic statement that maintains the warm, accessible sound that is the Lemon Jelly trademark, while mixing in a variety of other elements. Amid the sunny tinkling and mellow murmurs are snatches of spoken word, syncopated jazz loops, straight-up dance beats, and touches of crackly glitchtronica.
Following their last amazing journey, ...
| | B-Tribe Fiesta Fatal! CD (1994)
Chemical Imbalance songs
$9.29 The delirious "Intro" sets the stage for what's to come: murky synth washes are gently led into the sunshine by the sudden magisterial arrival of the flamenco guitar. The title track is a rousing instrumental that fuses techno with samplings of the Irish traditional ballad, "She Moved through the Fair" (referred to as "Belfast Child"), with a haunting vocal over a mix of percussion elements, synthesizer pads, and more flamenco. (Imagine Gypsy Kings mixing an album with Deep Forest). The track appears twice more, as a reprise and extended club remix. Another highlight is a reworking of an old Vangelis tune, here called "You Won't See Me Cry," wherein seductive spoken word whispers contrast with the impassioned Gypsy elements. Subsequent Tribe CDs would get more ethereal and languid but this debut has shown formidable ...
| | Aphex Twin Selected Ambient Works '85-92 CD (1993) Remastered
Chemical Imbalance album
$24.45 One of the indisputable classics of electronica, and a defining document for ambient music in particular, SELECTED AMBIENT WORKS 85-92 is one of Aphex Twin's (AKA Richard D. James) earliest and most fully realized achievements. Reputedly created on homemade equipment deconstructed from standard synthesizers, the music within takes its cue from club beats and the techno rhythms of rave and acid-house culture. Upon these foundations, however, Aphex Twin weaves melodic tapestries of great subtlety, beauty, and atmospheric texture.
"Tha," for example, contains a muted bass-drum pulse that becomes the center for evolving patterns of sound--a kind of aural mandala. The more driving rhythm of "Heliosphan" also gives rise to the ethereal play of melody. Several tracks, such as "Schottkey 7th Path" and "Hedphelym," have a tense, telescoping ambience that evokes paranoia and a sense of gravity-free floating at once. Other selections show Aphex Twin working more firmly in the techno-dance idiom, but even these display a complexity, elegance, and delicacy rarely heard in the genre. This landmark recording is one of the essential building blocks of any electronica collection.
Originally released in 1992 and now digitally remastered and available once again for the first time in 10 years is APHEX TWIN's seminal 'Selected Ambient Works 85-92'. Exploring the experimental possibilities inherent in acid and ambience, the two major influences on home-listening techno during the late '80s and early 90's, Richard D. James' recordings ...
| | Mum Summer Make Good CD (2004)
Chemical Imbalance CD music
$11.99 In 2002, Icelandic group Mum made a worldwide splash with FINALLY WE ARE NO ONE. Between them and the similarly glacial-sounding (if more rock-oriented) Sigur Ros (and a host of less familiar names, including the Funerals), it seemed like an Icelandic invasion might be brewing. Though that didn't quite turn out to be the case, Mum's international stock remained high, and their '04 follow-up, SUMMER MAKE GOOD, is just as blissful an experience as its predecessor. As before, gentle waves of electro-acoustic ambient pop ebb and flow, blurring the lines between song structure and mood music, pop and electronica, the overt and the intimated. Hushed, cooing, admittedly Bjork-like vocals intone serenely atop a bed of electronic and acoustic instruments that skitters through a glitch-pop landscape one moment and undulates over an organic, minimalistic haze of textures the next. ...
